A Presence in the Middle: 2030 Middles to Watch

Blocking is part of the equation, but so are the reads, footwork, timing, and ability to become a real offensive option in transition. Each of these middles has something in her game that has earned attention early. Now the question becomes what comes next, and there are a few areas from each that I'll be watching closely.    [player_tooltip player_id='1023090' first='Josie' last='Jensen'] has the tools to make an impact right through the middle. She has a good foundation at the net, with the ability to get involved as both an attacker and a blocker. The next piece I'll be watching is how quickly Jensen can read what is developing across the net and turn that first read into getting herself in the right place. As that part of her game becomes quicker, she has the opportunity to take away even more space defensively. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='1022295' first='Makenna' last='Porisch'] provides you with a middle who can be a factor offensively. Being available in transition and giving the setter a legitimate option through the center can change what a defense can commit to, and that is an area of Porisch's game that makes her interesting. I'll be watching how she continues to establish her timing and connection with her setters. The more consistently she can become an option in different situations, the harder she becomes for a defense to ignore. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='1023006' first='Gracie' last='Larson'] brings a physical presence to the middle and gives hitters something to deal with at the net. For Larson, I'm interested in the details of the blocking game: reading the setter, getting her first movement in the right direction, and closing cleanly with the pin. Those little pieces can turn simply getting above the net into actually taking away an attacker's preferred space. Larson has a foundation that makes that next step worth watching. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='932078' first='Kinley' last='Tupper'] is one I like for the movement she can bring to the position. A middle has very little time to move from one responsibility to the next, and being able to move efficiently along the net opens up possibilities on both offense and defense. With Tupper, I'll be watching how that movement translates into more disruption as a blocker and more availability in transition. Her activity in the middle could become a real strength. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='1023003' first='Audriana' last='George'] gives this group another middle who can make herself known around the net. Next, I want to see her turn opportunities into points, especially when she gets a favorable offensive matchup. Middles who can attack with purpose and make defenses respect the center of the net create openings for everyone around them. George has the chance to become that type of option as her offensive game continues to develop. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='1022901' first='Atley' last='Olson'] has an intriguing base to work from in the middle. She can be involved in the action at the net, but I'll be paying particular attention to her timing. Getting established early enough without committing too soon is a difficult piece of middle play, especially at this age. As Olson becomes more consistent with that timing, both her blocking and attacking game can reach another level. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='947801' first='Briley' last='Wolf'] is a middle I'll be watching closely. Block, get off the net, transition, and make yourself available again, and the middles who do those things consistently can have an impact even when they aren't the ones touching the ball. Wolf can influence rallies with her work between contacts. Becoming increasingly efficient from one play to the next could separate her. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas     [player_tooltip player_id='947800' first='Erin' last='Dooyema'] rounds out this group with another interesting presence in the middle. For Dooyema, the blocking side is where I'll be looking closely, not simply at whether she gets a touch, but at how well she reads the attack and positions her hands to take something away. Becoming disciplined at the net can make it difficult to attack around a middle blocker.
