A clean dig doesn't always make the highlight reel, but repeated first contacts allow Pace to keep running the offense it wants. That's especially important for a team with young attacking pieces. What I like about her role is that it doesn't require every swing to be pretty. Setters don't create all of that offense by themselves, but they determine whether everyone gets involved at the right time. Brookwood has enough weapons that forcing the ball to one player would actually make the offense easier to defend. I like how that changes an offense. When the right side can consistently score, opposing blockers can't simply lean toward the outside all night. She hasn't. Pope has been able to count on her for steady scoring while also asking her to handle the blocking responsibilities that come with lining up against opposing outsides. She doesn't need a huge number of attempts to influence a set, and her blocking presence allows the defenders behind her to play with a clearer picture of where the ball is likely to go.
