Bulldogs Bite on the Big Stage at Durango Classic

The Folsom Bulldogs came to Las Vegas as Sacramento County's top-ranked program and one of the more intriguing Northern California programs in this year's Durango Fall Classic field. A team that had already claimed first in Sacramento County and earned a state championship berth in the 2026 season stepped into a field featuring sixteen of the top twenty-five programs in the country and competed with a toughness and versatility that told the college coaches watching exactly why this program belongs on a national stage.   Pool play on Friday opened with a convincing 25-20 and 25-12 sweep of Arbor View from Las Vegas. It was a result that gave Folsom an efficient and confident start to the tournament before the real tests arrived. The second match brought Torrey Pines, a California powerhouse with a top-ten national profile, and the Bulldogs dropped it 13-25 and 16-25 in a performance that reflected the gap between where Folsom is and where the very top of the national field currently sits. Rather than letting that result define their day, they responded the way competitive programs respond. The pool closed with a 25-18 and 25-22 win over Huntington Beach that secured second place in the pool and a path into day two. That bounce-back performance after a tough loss was one of the more telling moments of the pool round for everyone watching.   Day two's match against Kamehameha Kapalama from Hawaii was one of the more compelling contests at the entire tournament from a pure competition standpoint. Folsom lost 21-25 and 24-26 but the scores tell only part of the story. Both teams left everything on the floor and the match could have gone either way at multiple moments as the sets extended deep into the late points. The Bulldogs competed with a resolve and resilience throughout that match that reflected a program that does not back down when the competition is at its most demanding. The division bracket that followed produced a three-set battle with Long Beach Poly, a nationally respected Southern California program, where Folsom dropped the opener 22-25, claimed the second 25-20 to force a decider, and ultimately fell 21-25 in a result that showed both the quality of what they brought to the floor and the margin they are working to close against the elite of the national field. Taking a set off Long Beach Poly in that environment is a result worth noting. I watched this match and I loved the fight that the entire team showed.    The individual performances that drove Folsom's run through the Durango tournament were significant and worth highlighting in detail. Senior middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='906588' first='Avery' last='Masters'] was a wall at the net throughout the event. The 6'3" [program_tooltip program_id='876532' first='OMNI' last='Volleyball'] product and 2026 NTDP Summer Training Series invitee, who was named MVP at a Kansas City national camp this past summer, redirected attackers and altered swings on contact she did not fully stuff, making every hitter on the other side of the net account for her presence before they left the ground. That kind of blocking impact is not always captured in a box score but it changes the math of a match in ways that experienced scouts and college coaches will recognize immediately.     Junior outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='778951' first='Jazmin' last='Ojo'] continued to build on a career that already includes 603 kills and 100 blocks accumulated across three varsity seasons, competing with the savvy and production of a player who has been in meaningful matches before and knows how to handle herself when the game is on the line. She is definitely someone that the entire team trusts with the ball in her hands at the net. She can score with the best of them from any location on the floor and has the confidence you want in a point scorer.     Senior left side [player_tooltip player_id='501336' first='Addison' last='Smith'], whose Prep Dig profile specifically notes her lightning-fast arm speed and versatile shot selection, played with the all-around quality that has defined her career at Folsom, contributing in serve receive and at the net with great productivity. She provided some quality serves from the end line when I watched also. I have her listed on our official Watch List for a reason.     Newcomer setter [player_tooltip player_id='584042' first='Lauren' last='Kim'] was one of the highlights of the Folsom run for anyone paying close attention. Her hands are as soft as any setter evaluated at this tournament, releasing the ball cleanly and consistently and delivering sets with a location that gave her hitters real opportunities rather than balls they had to work around. What stood out beyond the technical quality was her court vision in out-of-system situations, spreading the attack intelligently and creating one-on-one opportunities that an offense cannot generate without a setter who is reading the floor ahead of the ball.      Folsom returns to Northern California with Durango experience and a roster that is still developing into what it can become. The state championship run ahead of them this fall looks like one worth watching closely. If I were you, I would watch them closely from what I saw at the tourney.
