Heritage Christian: A Handful of Next-Level Talents

Don't let the 2A classification fool you—Heritage Christian has plenty of athletes capable of making an impact well beyond the small-school level. The Eagles are 13-7 and ranked No. 16 in Class 2A, with a roster loaded with multi-sport athletes, college-bound talent, and emerging players with serious upside. That combination of athleticism and competitiveness has Heritage Christian positioned to make noise when the state tournament arrives, while giving this roster several players worth watching closely along the way.    Mitchell brings an intriguing combination of athleticism, offensive efficiency, and physicality to the middle blocker position. Her springy athleticism (touches 10'2") allows her to attack the one and three balls with pace and power, while her ability to mix in off-speed shots gives her another way to score when the block takes away the hard angle. She is also a high-reaching blocker who does a good job pressing over the net, and her ability to serve deep adds value from the service line. Mitchell profiles as a strong M2 at the next level right now, with the potential to expand her recruiting value even further by developing her slide attack and adding more versatility to her offensive package.     Ring is a senior setter headed to Defiance College who brings outstanding leadership and communication to the court. She is constantly engaged, communicating with her hitters and recognizing what each attacker needs to be successful, while working tirelessly to keep the offense in rhythm. Ring does a nice job putting her hitters in scoring situations without forcing the game or trying to do too much herself, while also showing good instincts when choosing to dump or attack on her own—each time creating a point or taking the opponent out of system. As she transitions to the collegiate level, becoming more aggressive and active as a blocker will be an important area of development if she is expected to contribute to the front row.     Mensch is a springy, high-IQ outside hitter who consistently makes smart decisions and finds ways to score without giving away points. She attacks with both power and precision, using the entire court and rarely making unforced errors. Mensch is equally valuable at the net, where she reads well as a blocker, presses over the net, and provides a strong assist block against opposing middles, especially on the one ball. She also brings value from the service line with a deep float and in middle-back defense, where her ability to read the play and compete for every ball stands out. With continued improvement in serve receive, Mensch has the tools to develop into a six-rotation pin; at minimum, her combination of front-row attacking, blocking, serving, and defensive instincts gives Ferris State a high-value piece for its future roster.     At 6'0", Ralston is a middle blocker who combines offensive firepower with impressive discipline at the net. She can terminate the one ball with authority, showing the ability to score with both a heavy power shot and a well-executed cutback. Ralston also stood out as a blocker, particularly against opposing outside hitters, where her disciplined technique and ability to take away space without reaching made her difficult to score against. She adds another layer offensively with well-placed tips and a willingness to mix up her shots rather than relying solely on power. Ralston is also a multi-sport athlete who competes in lacrosse and basketball, and her athleticism and competitive instincts make her an intriguing athlete to watch as she continues toward the next level—hopefully in more than one sport.     At just 5'5" and a freshman, Flanagan may be one of the smallest players on the court, but she certainly doesn't play that way. A huge jumper and fearless attacker, she held her own at opposite against 6-foot hitters, even getting touch blocks against taller middles and outsides. Her left-handed swing is a natural advantage, and she does a particularly good job attacking hard crosscourt while showing no hesitation against a bigger block. Flanagan also brings the scrappy, competitive mentality that could make her a valuable defensive specialist as she develops. Continuing to expand her shot selection—particularly her line shot and an occasional roll shot over the block—will make her even tougher to defend.
