High Ball, High Ceiling: Georgia Outsides With Recruiting Upside

Outside hitter may be the most demanding all-around position on the floor.   Recruiters aren't simply looking for who can terminate the highest ball. They are evaluating whether an outside can pass well enough to stay on the floor for six rotations, create kills when the setter is out of system, defend, serve aggressively and continue demanding the ball after making an error.   The position requires skill, physicality and one of volleyball's most important intangibles: resilience.   These six Georgia outsides have shown traits worth tracking as the 2026 GHSA season moves forward.    [player_tooltip player_id='819497' first='Sydney' last='Jackson'] might be the most positionally versatile attacker in this group.   Parkview fell behind Collins Hill after a 26-24 opening set before responding to win the next two, including a 15-11 deciding set.   Jackson is currently Parkview's offensive leader at 3.0 kills per set while hitting .386. The 5-foot-9 senior is listed across the front row at MB, OH and OPP, and she also sits among Parkview's leaders in blocking.   The efficiency is particularly noteworthy for a player carrying that level of offensive responsibility.   For recruiters, Jackson presents a different evaluation than a traditional high-ball-only outside. Her ability to fill several attacking roles gives college coaches multiple possibilities when determining how her game could translate to another system. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     When a deciding set reaches 16-14, point-scoring ability from the pins becomes especially valuable.   Rockmart survived exactly that situation against Haralson County on Tuesday, winning 25-19, 23-25, 16-14.   Senior [player_tooltip player_id='810835' first='Amazia' last='Christopher'] is the Yellowjacket attacker recruiters should know.   Christopher currently leads Rockmart at 2.9 kills per set and has also recorded 35 aces, leading the team in both categories.   That combination expands the evaluation beyond attacking. She is producing points at the net and from the service line, which gives coaches another way to measure her overall scoring value.   For a senior prospect, the remaining GHSA season becomes increasingly important. Matches like Tuesday's — where the margin between winning and losing was two points — provide useful film for evaluating how an outside responds when her team needs a point late. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='1040460' first='Ava' last='Hilson']'s offensive production is noteworthy, but her age makes the evaluation considerably more interesting. Hilson has already become one of Decatur's players willing to carry attacking responsibility. Against Wheeler, she accounted for six of Decatur's 17 recorded kills, giving her more than a third of the team's offensive production.   For recruiters, however, the important question isn't simply whether she can score six kills. It is how many different ways can she eventually score? Young outside hitters often rely heavily on athleticism. The next stage is developing range: sharp cross-court, high hands, line, roll shots, deep corners and the ability to recycle difficult balls rather than forcing low-percentage swings.   Hilson's early varsity responsibility gives her plenty of opportunities to develop those tools. Her serving ability adds another positive layer. Two aces against Wheeler demonstrate another way she can apply pressure without attacking.   Because she is still an underclassman, recruiters should watch her growth in serve receive, shot selection and physical development. If those areas continue progressing alongside her current attacking instincts, her ceiling rises quickly. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='911166' first='Dara' last='Mason'] has a profile that should be evaluated as a six-rotation player, not simply an attacker. Listed at both outside hitter and defensive specialist, Mason brings experience in the two areas college programs most frequently demand from undersized outsides: ball control and offensive reliability.   At 5-foot-8, she isn't going to win every matchup through height alone. That means her recruiting value will depend heavily on the details — passing platform, serve-receive range, defensive instincts, approach speed and her ability to attack around larger blocks.   Leading Lowndes in kills per set demonstrates that she can carry offensive responsibility. The more important projection question is whether her first-contact skills allow a college coach to leave her on the floor through all six rotations. Players who pass consistently become much easier to recruit because coaches do not have to sacrifice ball control to gain offense. Mason's OH/DS background gives her an opportunity to demonstrate exactly that type of value. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='1021723' first='Zaniyah' last='Mason'] has developed into the type of player whose value extends well beyond a single statistic. She leads Eagle's Landing in kills per set, has produced from the service line and continues to shoulder a significant portion of the team's scoring responsibility. The most interesting part of Mason's evaluation is her ability to create offense despite not possessing overwhelming size for the position. At 5-foot-8, successful projection requires tools.   Can she accelerate her arm through contact? Does she see seams early? Can she wipe the block rather than trying to hit straight through it? Does she maintain enough ball control to stay on the court for six rotations? Her 48 aces provide another piece of the puzzle. Serving aggressively enough to create direct points shows confidence and gives her another skill that can translate immediately into a college gym.   Recruiters should also pay attention to Mason's competitive responsibility. Being the player a team repeatedly turns toward carries its own developmental value. High-volume attackers learn how to respond when opponents are specifically game-planning to stop them. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='917828' first='Ember' last='Hornburg'] is a projection player worth tracking early. The sophomore already leads North Cobb Christian in kills per set, meaning she is taking on meaningful offensive responsibility well before reaching the upperclassman portion of her career. That matters. Young outsides who are asked to carry varsity offense get repetitions that cannot easily be recreated in training. They learn how to attack bad sets, adjust to different blockers and continue swinging after mistakes.   Hornburg's next two years will tell recruiters much more than her current kill total alone. At 5-foot-8, her long-term projection will likely depend on how complete she becomes. Serve receive, defense, serving and attacking intelligence will be particularly important if she remains in the outside position.   Recruiters should watch for increased shot diversity and how she handles out-of-system situations. Can she turn a poor set into a neutral rally instead of an error? Can she tool bigger blockers? Can she become dependable enough in serve receive to remain a six-rotation option?   The fact that Hornburg is already North Cobb Christian's leading attacker gives her a strong developmental starting point.
