House of Payne Standouts

The House of Payne tournament brought together some of the top programs and talent in Arizona, giving us an early look at athletes who are ready to make an impact this school season. From big-time offensive performances to gritty defensive efforts and players who simply found ways to make their teams better, there was no shortage of talent on display. We had the chance to watch a number of athletes rise to the occasion throughout the tournament, but these standouts consistently caught our attention with their play.    [player_tooltip player_id='888725' first='London' last='Clark'] is truly the backbone of a loaded O'Connor squad this season. There are powerful weapons all over the floor, but Clark is the piece that allows them to operate at such a high level offensively. Her ability to run a true offense from just about anywhere on the court makes her incredibly dangerous. She stays neutral with her body and does an excellent job disguising her sets, making it difficult for opposing blockers to anticipate where she's going.   Clark pushes a fast tempo that keeps opposing middles working to catch up and consistently puts her hitters in great situations to score. She's also a difference-maker defensively and brings a steady presence to the floor. With Clark running the offense, O'Connor has all the pieces to make a serious run this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='882771' first='Makinlee' last='Landis'] was nearly unstoppable this weekend, proving once again just how dangerous she can be from anywhere along the net. Hamilton utilizes her in a variety of ways offensively, and she has the versatility to terminate whether she's running a slide, attacking a quick, or taking a ball on the outside. She's constantly in the air and available as an option, which makes her incredibly difficult for opposing defenses to track.   Landis is just as impactful on the defensive side of the net, where she's a phenomenal blocker with great presence and instincts. She's also someone you absolutely do not want to overpass to—she'll make you pay quickly. Landis continues to show why she's such an important piece of Hamilton's lineup, and we expect her to keep making a major impact throughout the season.     Riley Chandler was an impressive six-rotation outside for the Colts this weekend, making an impact in nearly every aspect of the game. She has a heavy arm swing paired with a strong, explosive approach, but what stood out just as much was her ability to see the floor and make adjustments when needed. She doesn't rely solely on power—she finds ways to score and consistently makes smart decisions that put her team in a great position.   Chandler's back-row game is every bit as impactful as what she brings offensively. She was incredibly steady in serve receive and showed great instincts defensively, making her a true six-rotation presence. She's one of those athletes who immediately catches your attention because you can see the passion and competitiveness in everything she does on the court. Chandler is definitely one we'll continue to follow closely as the season progresses!     [player_tooltip player_id='881055' first='Emma' last='Elbert'] was on fire this weekend, and one of the biggest things that stood out was the way she elevated everyone around her when she was on the court. She's an offense-first setter who plays aggressively and isn't afraid to become an offensive threat herself, especially when an overpass gives her an opportunity to attack. Her decision-making is strong, and she does an excellent job of putting her hitters in positions to be successful.   Elbert is also a true floor general. You can hear her communicating on every play, and she carries herself with a confidence and maturity that stands out, especially in tough moments. She stays composed, leads those around her, and plays volleyball well beyond her years. We can't wait to see what Elbert and the rest of this Pinnacle squad accomplish as the season continues.     [player_tooltip player_id='881802' first='Aubrey' last='Burns'] truly runs the back court for Millennium. They are able to run a great offense because [player_tooltip player_id='881802' first='Aubrey' last='Burns'] truly runs the back court for Millennium, and her consistency allows the Tigers to operate their offense at such a high level. Her commitment to getting every ball up is relentless—she plays all-out defense, covers an incredible amount of court, and was rock solid in serve receive throughout the weekend. Burns simply refuses to let balls hit the floor.   Her off-blocker defense was especially impressive, as she consistently put herself in the right position and made difficult plays look routine. Beyond the skill, Burns is a clear leader on the floor who brings confidence and stability to the players around her. She proved again this weekend why she's one of the top players in her class. We always enjoy watching Burns do her thing, and she's already off to an impressive start to her senior season.     [player_tooltip player_id='807547' first='Vega' last='Thunnell'] was dominant on the outside for Sunnyslope this weekend and showed just how complete her game has become. She does an excellent job of picking her moments offensively, knowing when to unleash her power and when to take something off and find the open court. That combination of power, vision, and decision-making makes her incredibly difficult to defend.   Thunnell impacts the game well beyond her swing, too. She's heavily involved in off-blocker defense, puts up a strong block against opposing right sides, and provides a consistent platform in serve receive. She sees the floor extremely well and is constantly communicating with the players around her. Thunnell has established herself as a leader for this Sunnyslope squad, and with the way she's playing early on, we expect her to make a major impact throughout the season.     [player_tooltip player_id='784641' first='Sadie' last='Wahlin'] is such a powerful presence in the middle and consistently gives even the most talented pins in the gym problems at the net. She puts up a big, disciplined block, reads setters extremely well, and has the quickness to close and take away space from opposing attackers. She's the type of middle hitters have to be aware of every time they approach.   Offensively, Wahlin is just as impactful. She transitions quickly, is constantly up and available as an option, and brings a heavy arm swing that's paired with impressive accuracy and ball placement. Her ability to impact the game on both sides of the net makes her such an important piece of this Valley Christian squad. We're excited to watch Wahlin continue to make her mark and help keep Valley Christian among the frontrunners in 3A this season.     When it comes to the top outside hitters in the state, [player_tooltip player_id='877226' first='Lila' last='Ellsworth'] absolutely has to be part of the conversation. There's something different about the way she plays the position—from her approach and explosive arm swing to the consistency she brings in serve receive. She's a complete six-rotation outside who can impact a match in so many different ways.   Ellsworth is a major threat from the front row, but her back-row attack might be one of the most lethal parts of her game. She can terminate from anywhere on the court and forces defenses to account for her in every rotation. Just as impressive is the composure she brings as a leader. She stays calm under pressure, competes with confidence, and provides a steady presence for her team when the moment gets big. There's no doubt her game will translate extremely well to the next level, but for now, we're excited to sit back and watch Ellsworth dominate her senior season.     Ironwood Ridge is not a team you can sleep on this season, and a huge reason why is the way [player_tooltip player_id='888731' first='Marcella' last='Landers'] runs the floor. She's a confident setter who isn't afraid to take risks, set against the grain, and challenge opposing blockers with her decision-making. Landers has a great feel for who's hot in the moment and knows exactly when to lean on her go-to options.   She's also incredibly quick defensively and does a great job keeping Ironwood Ridge in system—or giving them a chance to get back into system—when plays break down. Her ability to create hittable balls in out-of-system situations keeps her offense dangerous even when the first contact isn't perfect. Landers brings confidence, intelligence, and consistency to the position, and she's a major reason Ironwood Ridge is a team to keep an eye on this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='778035' first='Kalista' last='Fuller'] is a fighter and a total standout on the outside for Perry. She brings such a complete game to the floor, playing great middle-back defense while providing a steady, consistent presence in serve receive. She competes hard for every point, and when things get tough, Fuller is the type of player who digs even deeper.   Offensively, her power is undeniable. She has an especially dangerous line shot that puts tremendous pressure on opposing setters and right-back defenders, but what makes her so difficult to defend is her ability to mix up her shots. Even the best defensive teams have trouble getting a read on where she's going next. Fuller plays fearlessly, never gives up on a play, and continues to prove why she's such an important piece of this Perry squad.     [player_tooltip player_id='886861' first='Kaylie' last='Lynar'] was outstanding as Basha's floor general this weekend, showing great command of the offense from start to finish. She pushed a quick tempo, established her middles early and often, and consistently found ways to create opportunities even off the toughest passes. When plays broke down, Lynar stayed composed and found a way to keep Basha in the point.   Her impact extended well beyond setting. Lynar was all over the court defensively, covered her hitters extremely well, and brought great energy to every point. She celebrates her teammates hard, but she's also constantly communicating and making the adjustments necessary to help them be successful. She brings a competitive, steady presence to the floor, and we can't wait to continue watching Lynar's journey with the Bears this season.     [player_tooltip player_id='878846' first='Brenna' last='Elise Walsh'] was outstanding defensively for Corona this weekend, consistently finding ways to keep her team alive through some of the toughest rallies. She reads the game extremely well and always seems to be anticipating what the opponent is going to do next, allowing her to put herself in the right position before the attack even comes.   Walsh is also one of those players who makes serve receive look effortless. She provides a steady platform, covers her hitters extremely well, and brings an energy that elevates everyone around her. She's a true anchor for the Aztecs' defense and gives them a level of consistency that will be huge as the season progresses. We're excited to watch Walsh take on her senior year, and with her commanding the back court, this Corona squad is definitely one to keep an eye on.    <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   The school season is just getting started, and we can't wait to continue following Arizona athletes and programs throughout the fall!
