How about a nod to the signal-callers?

Early-season results are rolling in, and we already have a list of immediate standouts in the Nebraska high school season. Many of those names came from our weekend visit to the Bellevue West Invite, where middle blockers, pin hitters, and liberos all shared the spotlight.

We're going coast to coast with the setters. Or, rather, from the Missouri River to the panhandle. Setters can be excused for needing a while to settle into the flow and rhythm of regular-season play, but many of Nebraska's rising stars are wasting no time. The first handful of matches have yielded several noteworthy performers who could be building breakout campaigns on the prep stage.

Let's dish them out.

It's no mystery that Amherst is well-positioned to back up last year's Class D1 championship. Hagan has ensured that the repeat bid would begin without a hitch. She took the reins of the Bronco offense last weekend, churning out 10.7 assists per set while playing around the dial. It's a big development that proves Hagan's ability to command a team in every rotation. Amherst's 5-0 start has placed its deep, experienced cast back on our small-town radar.

Adams Central is another small-town powerhouse planning a return trip to Lincoln this November. The Patriots boast plenty of returning assets from last year's crew, including one of its savvy setters from the Class of 2028. Smith upped her averages from a year ago while helping Adams Central earn a 4-1 start this fall. She was particularly sharp while participating in wins against recognizable schools like Sutton, Minden, and Nebraska Christian. Smith paired her second-contact consistency with the gritty floor defense you'd expect from an Adams Central athlete.

We finally brought this North Platte standout into our database after our last rankings update, and Thramer's rise is just beginning. She impressed us during WWVA's stint at the Great Plains Region Bid Tournament, piloting a quick, snappy offense. That was a good precursor to Thramer's strong opening stretch with North Platte, highlighted by wins over Omaha Westview, Platte County (MO), and Broken Bow. The Bulldogs haven't been afraid to vary systems and lineups this year, but Thramer has emerged as a mainstay at one of the starting setter spots.

We might as well fit in one more emerging athlete from the Bellevue West Invite. The hosting Thunderbirds showed us a lot of new leaders at last weekend's event, and Hoogeveen made her case as a trendsetter while distributing out of the back row. This versatile athlete climbed the age ladder to represent Premier Nebraska 17 Silver, so don't expect Hoogeveen to shy away from sparring with Class A powerhouses. Her hustle against top-tier teams laid a solid foundation for Bellevue West's further progress throughout the 2026 season.

Lincoln Southeast wants to show that last year's tournament breakthrough was no fluke. The Knights can lean on Stokes to perpetuate their resurgence in the Class A race, and early matches have added to the optimism. This VCNebraska standout has produced nearly eight assists per set in her first handful of matches with LSE. These sophomore reps have given us our best-ever look at Stokes' physicality and aggression as a blocker. She can run the 5-1 as well as any Lincoln-area sophomore.

Look out for the Louisville crew. Zwiener has produced some of the most eye-popping numbers among Nebraska's 2029s, placing her firmly on our rankings radar for midseason updates. Her 9.6 assists per set were the catalyst for Louisville's wins over Falls City and Omaha Brownell Talbot. We've also been introduced to Zwiener's tough, winding serve that can freeze passers down the line. Louisville's underclassman setter is a reminder of how much we still have to see in Nebraska's Class of 2029.

We're about to get a major influx of database additions from the Class of 2030. We have a lot to learn about this year's freshmen, and Hoffman has already taught us a lot about her all-around game. She averaged nearly ten assists per set during Chadron's perfect 6-0 start. The Cardinals have the unique opportunity to take their brand of volleyball across state lines. South Dakota competitors could seldom figure out Hoffman's deceptive setting style on opening week, and this second-year star will grow increasingly comfortable in the panhandle scene.

Add another southeast Nebraska gem. Kottich has been an instant freshman star with Palmyra, posting about eight assists per set during the Panthers' first two contests. This second-contact production is only part of the story, as Kottich has also been incredibly productive as a right-back defender. She ties everything together with the attacking mindset needed to set across the front row, and we can't wait to see what's next from the signal-calling 2030s.

How about a nod to the signal-callers?
