This opening-week spectacle has a way of testing backcourt defenders.

The Bellevue West Invite draws some of the best of Class A and Class B, so we're bound to see some high-flying attackers throughout the tournament. Tough serves are a staple, too. It's the perfect proving ground for the gritty liberos who do much of the "dirty work" along the end line.

So, after dedicating past features to middle blockers and pin hitters, it's only fair that we pivot over to these first-contact specialists. Liberos had a big say in which teams started hot at last weekend's event, and we've compiled a list to watch as the fall grind continues.

We have no shortage of stars to see.

Waverly's 2026 roster is stacked with veterans, and Real is one of many seasoned assets in the starting rotation. She was willing to shift around the serve-receive pattern last weekend, exhibiting Real's steady platform in any zone. The Vikings found themselves in plenty of grueling rallies against Class A titans, but this senior has seen it all. Real's growth will be worth watching as Waverly hopes to take the next step toward a Class B crown.

Liberos have done a lot for Bennington's recent rise in the Omaha-area hierarchy. Now, Schroeder could uphold this tradition as the Badgers navigate a new era in the Class A ranks. This veteran libero has been a staple of Nebraska Elite's triumphs in the Class of 2027, producing big-time plays against the nation's best. It's hard to believe she's already a senior, but Schroeder's influence with Bennington continues to peak. We wouldn't expect anything less from this accomplished defender.

Gretna's elite attackers get a lot of the hype, but the Dragons can also roll out an army of defensive specialists at any time. Owen accompanied a loaded Gretna backcourt en route to the Bellevue West Invite semifinals, cementing the Dragons' status as a Class B frontrunner. This Nebraska Elite standout made her mark through right-back defense, dialing in well-placed digs on shots down the line. No matter which lineup Gretna deploys, Owen and her Class of 2028 peers remain a force in the state title race.

Pedersen is getting back to business. She was the focal point of Lincoln Standing Bear's defensive prowess last year, and she's helping the Grizzlies climb the ladder in a tough Star City scene. Pedersen was particularly effective during Saturday's bracket showdowns, bringing a dynamic platform that could dig balls outside her midline. She has a knack for making sprawling plays look controlled and effortless.

It's a good time to keep tabs on our Avoli Committed Athlete from this summer's Nebraska Stock Up Showcase. Harvey joins a host of other big-name defensive specialists on the Bellevue West roster. This allows her to adapt to various lineups from match to match, and last weekend's invite was an ideal chance to demonstrate that range. Some of Harvey's best moments came in the middle-back area, where her quick first steps led the clutch digs in the campfire. Look for the Thunderbirds to keep wielding its backcourt gems throughout the 2026 campaign.

Like Harvey, Ritterbush became a "middle-back specialist" during Millard West's stay at the Bellevue West Invite. We had high expectations for this sophomore after Ritterbush anchored a stout Premier Nebraska 15 Black defense. She readily absorbed passing volume last weekend and could communicate seams effectively. Having a large share of the spotlight will help Ritterbush flourish in the Wildcat program, and she has plenty of decorated veterans to lean on, too.

Well, this was quite a debut. We had been introduced to Douglas' sharp backcourt skills through the Prep Dig Exposure Tour, but she elevated her game a step further while wearing Skutt Catholic's contrasting jersey. This freshman star was never rattled by the hard-hitting slugfests that always dominate the Bellevue West Invite. Douglas channeled her defensive instincts and quick feet to spearhead the SkyHawks' climb to Saturday's semifinals. Taking over the back row for a volleyball juggernaut is daunting for any athlete, so seeing a freshman carry that role is even more remarkable.

This opening-week spectacle has a way of testing backcourt defenders.
