Nothing Easy at the Net: 6 Georgia Blockers Working Every Angle

Blocking numbers tell you how many balls a player touched.   They don't always tell you how many swings she changed.   The blockers I enjoy evaluating most are the ones who make hitters think before they ever contact the ball. They close space, take away comfortable angles and force attackers into shots they weren't originally planning to hit.   That ability doesn't always produce a stuff block.   Sometimes it produces a bad swing for someone else to dig.   These six Georgia blockers are giving opposing offenses something to think about.    [player_tooltip player_id='573519' first='Jade' last='Howard'] has developed into the type of middle whose value goes beyond a single skill. Her offensive efficiency and blocking production make her worth evaluating, but I keep coming back to the concentration required to play middle within a talented offense. Middles don't always get the luxury of rhythm.   An outside may receive several consecutive sets. A middle might go multiple rallies without touching an offensive ball and then suddenly be expected to terminate a quick in transition. That requires focus.   On film, I'd want to see Howard's availability. Is she consistently presenting a target even when she hasn't been set recently? Does she continue drawing the opposing middle with her route? That's an intangible that matters.   A middle doesn't have to receive the ball to create space for a teammate. If Howard can consistently influence the defense just by staying committed to her routes while also providing blocking value, she gives recruiters a player whose impact extends beyond what appears in the box score.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Taylor Myers brings the kind of versatility that makes blocking evaluation more interesting. She's been used at both middle and opposite, giving her experience in two very different blocking jobs. In the middle, you're reading everything and trying to close space across the entire net.   On the right, you're often staring directly at the opponent's best outside hitter. If Myers can become comfortable doing both, she gives a future coach flexibility with how she's used. I'd especially watch her hand positioning.   Stuff blocks are great, but good blockers also funnel the ball toward their defense. A disciplined right-side blocker might intentionally take away line and give the back row a predictable cross-court ball. That's team defense, not just individual blocking. The more Myers understands that relationship between her hands and the defenders behind her, the more valuable her versatility becomes.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Reese McDuffie is a freshman already leading Milton with 50 blocks. That should make recruiters curious immediately. Not because 50 blocks automatically makes someone a future college middle, but because young middles usually need time to learn how to read. There is a lot happening in front of them.   Setter position. Pass quality. Approach routes. Tempo. Pin availability. A freshman consistently finding herself involved in that many blocks is getting valuable repetitions very early. What I would not do is evaluate McDuffie as though she is already a finished prospect. I'd watch the foundation.   How naturally does she move laterally? Does she recognize where the offense is going before the ball leaves the setter's hands? Does she keep her hands strong over the net? Physical development will come. Strength will come. The exciting part is that she is already doing the difficult mental work of playing middle at the varsity level. For a 2030 prospect, that's a very good place to begin.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='1002797' first='Leni' last='Hansraj'] has a stat profile that tells you she's affecting more than one phase. She has been Sequoyah's most efficient attacker, its leading blocker and one of its strongest servers. Earlier season numbers had her around .300 offensively with more than 30 blocks and more than 30 aces. That's a fun middle to evaluate.   Serving pressure from a middle gives a coach another way to keep that player influencing the match when she rotates away from the net. What I especially like, though, is the combination of blocking and efficiency. A middle who can slow the opponent down and then turn around and score efficiently in transition changes momentum quickly.   Recruiters should study Hansraj's ability to repeat that sequence. Block. Land. Get off the net. Reload. Become available. Some middles are good blockers and good attackers as separate skills. The next level belongs to the ones who connect the two.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     [player_tooltip player_id='813076' first='Emerson' last='Jarboe'] has become the primary blocking presence for Johns Creek, leading the Gladiators with 36 total blocks. What interests me isn't simply the total. It's whether she makes the court feel smaller.   Good blockers change an attacker's decision before the ball reaches her hand. They take away the comfortable line shot or force a hitter farther cross-court than she originally intended. Jarboe has enough production to justify looking closely at how she creates those touches. For recruiters, I'd watch the patience in her blocking.   Does she stay grounded long enough to read instead of guessing? Can she resist chasing the setter's body when the ball is going somewhere else? When she closes, are her hands working together or leaving a seam? Those details become more important as offensive tempo increases. Senior middles who understand that blocking is as much about discipline as athleticism can transition into college systems faster than players who rely only on physical tools.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga     Claire McEnaney gives recruiters an appealing combination: she is currently St. Pius X's most efficient hitter at .325 and its leading blocker with 39 total blocks. I like middles who make their touches count. The position doesn't always offer volume. You might go several rallies without getting set and then suddenly have to turn one transition opportunity into a point. That requires patience and concentration. McEnaney's efficiency suggests she isn't treating every attack as though she has to manufacture something spectacular.   For recruiters, I'd spend time on her movement before the block. Does she recognize the pass early? Does she get her first step moving before the setter releases? Can she close without drifting past the hitter?   St. Pius faced both Woodward Academy and Hebron Christian last week, giving evaluators useful film against strong competition. That's the environment where I want to evaluate a middle: when her reads have to happen quickly and mistakes get punished.~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga    A great blocker doesn't just stop attacks.   She changes decisions.   That's the recruiting lens I'd use with these six. The totals are useful, but the real evaluation is whether their movement, timing and hand discipline can continue disrupting offenses as the speed and physicality increase.
