The Durango Classic has become one of the premier tourneys early in the high school season that brings together some of the best talent in the country. I was able to attend in person and camped out at the four courts at Silverado High School to enjoy some high level ball. Here is a look at a few sophomore studs who were dominant on day one of this prestigious tourney in my eyes.

Leah Scott is one of those setters who makes the game look easy and then does something that reminds you it is not. Her hands are as soft as any setter I watched today at the Durango Classic, delivering the ball cleanly and consistently regardless of where the pass put her. What makes her stand out beyond the technical side is the athleticism she brings to the position. She covers the floor like a libero, gets down for balls that most setters wave at, and uses an explosive first step and strong physical frame to track down passes that should not be settable. Her ability to push tempo from out of system situations is one of the more advanced qualities I saw from any setter in this field today and the energy she brings to every point makes her side of the net go.

Julia Masselink is the kind of outside hitter who changes the math for a defense. The length she brings to the left pin combined with a vertical that scouts will be wowed by makes her contact point genuinely difficult for opposing blockers to reach and when she cranks on the ball it disappears before the defense has time to adjust. She is a true six-rotation player who serves with pace and precision from the line and contributes in the back row without asking to be protected. The back row attack she provides is a legitimate offensive weapon that gives her setter an option even when the system is under pressure. She is a sophomore and she is already doing all of this at the Durango Classic against one of the better fields assembled anywhere in the country this fall. College coaches who did not make time to watch her today need to find her film tonight.

[player_tooltip player_id='894187' first='Chevelle' last='Peters'] may have been the most technically complete six-rotation outside hitter I watched today at the entire Durango Classic tournament. The Lone Peak high school pin attacker kept her weight distribution in serve receive positioned forward, staying off her heels and keeping herself light and balanced throughout every contact so she could change direction instantly when a difficult ball came her way. That kind of platform discipline and foot positioning is the detail that separates passers who survive from passers a setter trusts in every rotation. Beyond the serve receive, the explosiveness she generates in transition and the impact she makes across every phase of the game reflects a player who has been built right from the ground up technically. Every college coach in the country needs her name on their board. She is a sophomore and she is already one of the most complete pin hitters I have evaluated this season.

As always stay tuned for more articles on your favorite athletes. If you have anyone you think we should watch out for, please shoot me an email with some info at Michael@prepdig.com. You can also DM me in Instagram and X by searching @CoachMikeDZ. Also don't forget to help these kids get more exposure by sharing our stories with your friends. Help us help them by simply reposting on X or sharing on Facebook. Thanks for following us, Prep Dig Family! Don't be afraid to interact with us. We love the likes, shares, and quotes/comments. Keep them coming!
