Defense can be one of the hardest parts of the game to evaluate at a young age, because I'm looking for much more than who can make the highlight-reel dig. I want to see who reads the hitter, gets their feet to the ball, controls first contact, and turns tough swings into something their setter can actually use. As I've been tracking North Dakota's 2030 class, a group of young defenders has started separating themselves in those areas. Plenty of development is still coming, but the way these players see the game and handle the backcourt already has my attention.

[player_tooltip player_id='893809' first='Tenleigh' last='Carns'] reads the game extremely well for a young defender. She isn't waiting for the ball to be hit before deciding where she needs to go. I watch her eyes because she is already picking up pieces of the attack, getting herself into position, and giving herself a chance at balls before they ever cross the net. That shows up against hard swings, but also when hitters change things up with rolls and tips. Tenleigh seems to have a feel for where the ball is going, and that ability to read the game is what keeps standing out every time I see her. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Quick is the word that comes to mind when you think of [player_tooltip player_id='1038865' first='Ella' last='Isaak']. Her first move is incredibly quick, which lets her cover much more court than you might expect. She can get underneath a hard-driven ball and then turn around and chase one into the short court on the next play. I especially like her when things get chaotic because she doesn't need everything to develop perfectly in front of her. Ella reacts, moves, and finds a way to get a touch. There are balls you think are down that suddenly aren't when she is back there. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1040344' first='Harper' last='Ulland'] gives you more than defensive touches. She gives you a presence in the backcourt. She communicates, takes responsibility, and isn't afraid to direct traffic around her. That matters when you're talking about defense because six players can't be guessing who has what. Harper brings some organization to the floor while still taking care of her own job. I've watched a lot of young players who can pass a volleyball. Finding one who is already willing to lead while doing it is different. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1047526' first='Sophie' last='Larson'] is watching the setter, and that immediately caught my attention. Instead of staring at the ball and reacting late, she is looking for clues before the attack develops. Where is the setter? What options are available? Where is the ball likely going next? You can see Sophie working through those things as the play unfolds. That helps her start moving before the attack is coming at her. Reading setters is a skill that gets better with experience, so seeing Sophie already use that part of the game makes her an interesting 2030 defender for me. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='1047637' first='Harper' last='Wick'] understands how to protect her seams, and that's what I notice every time I watch her in serve receive. She knows where her responsibility starts and doesn't let balls sneak between passers because of hesitation or poor communication. Harper works to get her body behind the serve, holds her platform, and takes care of her space. She has confidence in how she handles first contact, especially when servers try to challenge the gaps. For a young defender, that awareness of the court and the players around her is a big piece of what I like about her game. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas
