<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Every rally that reaches a hitter starts with someone getting a platform on the ball. Dig totals show which sophomore defenders are handling the most volume and keeping their teams in rallies. The list below ranks the state's top 25 sophomore liberos and defensive specialists by total digs.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Totals tell part of the story. Digs per set tell the rest. Schedules vary widely across California, so some of the most active defenders in the class sit lower on the list because they've played fewer sets. Dig numbers also reflect team context: how often a team is on defense, the serving it faces, and how a coach divides the back row. Several athletes here carry dual position tags, which points to roles bigger than a stat line can show.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Six sophomore liberos are averaging 5.0 or more digs per set, and the Top 25 stretches from Alturas, Hoopa, and Arcata down to Lakeside and Escondido. A few of these defenders are names PrepDig has followed since their 14s club seasons. Their numbers now show what that development looks like on varsity.</p>

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>[player_tooltip player_id='1052161' first='Kara' last='Erquiaga'] leads every sophomore libero in California in digs, and she is doing it out of Alturas in the far northeast corner of the state. She is averaging 6.0 per set across 82 sets, one of the heaviest workloads in the class.</p>

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>[player_tooltip player_id='1052162' first='Abigail' last='Ponce'] sits nine digs behind the leader while playing 12 fewer sets. At her current rate, she would close that gap in under two sets. Her 6.9 per set is the highest in the Top 25 among athletes with 70 or more sets.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>That rate says a lot about her role. A sophomore averaging close to seven digs a set is covering a lot of floor for Hanford every night.</p>

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>PrepDig first featured [player_tooltip player_id='715906' first='Omari' last='Ramirez'] on the Freshman Libero Watchlist after the 2025 SoCal Freshman Showcase. Her game continues to improve. She tracks the ball early and runs down plays most defenders give up on. At the West Coast Showcase this spring, she stood out for efficient, controlled serve receive that kept her team in system.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Heading into her freshman year, she described herself as someone who stays happy on and off the court, even in the most intense matches. That same steadiness now comes with one of the heaviest defensive workloads in the class. Arlington also has sophomore outside Zoe Dileo among the class's top 50 in digs.</p>

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>[player_tooltip player_id='1052165' first='Bryce' last='Cordova'] matches Omari's 5.8 per set and carries both libero and setter on her position tag. That combination matters to coaches. A libero who is comfortable with her hands gives a team a real option on second contact when the setter takes the first ball.</p>

<p><strong>Harper Liedecke </strong><br><strong>390 digs | 75 sets | 5.2 per set</strong></p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Harper Liedecke is one of six sophomore liberos above 5.0 per set, and she has held that rate over 75 sets. Her role has grown with the numbers. As a sophomore, she is a captain and El Capitan's full-time libero.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“As a captain and head libero this season, my role is to be a leader on and off the court, encourage my teammates, and help keep everyone motivated. Last year, I split roles as a libero and DS. I've learned to take on more responsibility, communicate better, and lead by example while helping the team grow together.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>She plays with a setter-first mindset in serve receive. Coaches value passers who measure a good rep by what it gives the offense, not just whether the ball stayed up.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“My main focus is to help contribute to my team and help my setter run a good offense.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>She credits her offseason work and her coaches for the growth in her mindset since freshman year. That growth shows up in how she approaches the hardest part of the job.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“I have improved on my mindset by pushing myself in the offseason, with my coaches also pushing me to my maximum potential.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“My favorite hitter is a hitter who is not afraid to swing and wants to put the ball away because it's a challenge.”</p>

<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>[player_tooltip player_id='1052214' first='Skye' last='Fausner'] has the highest per-set rate on the board, and it isn't close. Her 8.2 digs per set came over just 45 sets. At that pace, she would reach 492 digs in roughly 15 more sets. She shares the floor with sophomore outside Sariah Davis, who also ranks among the class's top 50 in digs.</p>

<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p><strong>Lauren Meza </strong><br><strong>367 digs | 78 sets | 4.7 per set</strong></p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>In August, she was one of the most electric liberos at Queens of the Court, sprawling to keep balls alive during Bishop Amat's run to the semifinals. She plays club for San Gabriel Elite.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Her role at Bishop Amat has grown into one built on consistency and leadership.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“This season, my role is to be a consistent presence in the back row, help lead our defense, and communicate with my teammates. Compared to last year, I've become more confident and taken on more responsibility and leadership in serve receive and defense.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>She plays with strong emotional control. In pressure moments, she narrows her focus to the next pass instead of the scoreboard, a habit coaches look for in a libero who will be trusted with serve receive late in sets.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“When the pressure is on I try to stay calm and to believe in myself. I feel that confidence is key during serve receive, especially during pressure moments. I focus on making a good pass rather than worrying about the score.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>Her growth since freshman year shows up in how she reads the game. She is anticipating where the ball is going before it gets there.</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“I've gotten better at reading hitters, anticipating where the ball is going, and communicating with my teammates.”</p>
<!-- /wp:paragraph -->
<!-- wp:paragraph -->
<p>“I stay locked in by focusing on the next point and not letting mistakes or the score affect me. I trust my preparation, communicate with my teammates, and remind myself to stay aggressive and give my best effort on every ball.”</p>

Every rally that reaches a hitter starts with someone getting a platform on the ball. Dig totals show which sophomore defenders are handling the most volume and keeping their teams in rallies. The list below ranks the state's top 25 sophomore liberos and defensive specialists by total digs.
Totals tell part of the story. Digs per set tell the rest. Schedules vary widely across California, so some of the most active defenders in the class sit lower on the list because they've played fewer sets. Dig numbers also reflect team context: how often a team is on defense, the serving it faces, and how a coach divides the back row. Several athletes here carry dual position tags, which points to roles bigger than a stat line can show.
Six sophomore liberos are averaging 5.0 or more digs per set, and the Top 25 stretches from Alturas, Hoopa, and Arcata down to Lakeside and Escondido. A few of these defenders are names PrepDig has followed since their 14s club seasons. Their numbers now show what that development looks like on varsity.
All statistics are sourced from MaxPreps and entered by coaches through the MaxPreps Team Admin system. Stats published as of October 15, 2026.

Arlington | 2029 CA
on the Freshman Libero Watchlist after the 2025 SoCal Freshman Showcase. Her game continues to improve. She tracks the ball early and runs down plays most defenders give up on. At the West Coast Showcase this spring, she stood out for efficient, controlled serve receive that kept her team in system.
Heading into her freshman year, she described herself as someone who stays happy on and off the court, even in the most intense matches. That same steadiness now comes with one of the heaviest defensive workloads in the class. Arlington also has sophomore outside Zoe Dileo among the class's top 50 in digs.

In August, she was one of the most electric liberos at Queens of the Court, sprawling to keep balls alive during Bishop Amat's run to the semifinals. She plays club for San Gabriel Elite.
Her role at Bishop Amat has grown into one built on consistency and leadership.
“This season, my role is to be a consistent presence in the back row, help lead our defense, and communicate with my teammates. Compared to last year, I've become more confident and taken on more responsibility and leadership in serve receive and defense.”
She plays with strong emotional control. In pressure moments, she narrows her focus to the next pass instead of the scoreboard, a habit coaches look for in a libero who will be trusted with serve receive late in sets.
“When the pressure is on I try to stay calm and to believe in myself. I feel that confidence is key during serve receive, especially during pressure moments. I focus on making a good pass rather than worrying about the score.”
Her growth since freshman year shows up in how she reads the game. She is anticipating where the ball is going before it gets there.
“I've gotten better at reading hitters, anticipating where the ball is going, and communicating with my teammates.”
“I stay locked in by focusing on the next point and not letting mistakes or the score affect me. I trust my preparation, communicate with my teammates, and remind myself to stay aggressive and give my best effort on every ball.”
