5 Setters Whose Value Goes Beyond the Second Contact

Assists tell us where the ball ended up.

They don't tell us everything that happened before it got there.

Setter evaluation has to go deeper than totals. I'm looking at how quickly a player processes the block, how well she manages hitters with different tempos, whether she can keep an offense organized when first contact breaks down and how much confidence she creates in the players around her.

Leadership matters at this position because every rally eventually runs through the setter's hands.

These five are at different stages of their development, but each has something worth examining from a recruiting perspective.

Johnson gives Denmark a junior setter in a lineup that advanced into the second round of the state playoffs. By junior year, my expectations at setter begin shifting. I'm no longer evaluating only whether the ball reaches the target, i'm looking for manipulation.

Can Johnson hold the middle blocker long enough to create separation for a pin? Can she recognize an opponent leaning toward one attacker and punish that tendency elsewhere? Can she change tempo without changing the quality of the location? That is where setting starts becoming offensive rather than simply functional.

Court leadership also becomes increasingly important. A junior setter should be developing enough understanding of the system to help solve problems during the match instead of waiting for every adjustment to come from the sideline. The setters who can process information, communicate it and immediately apply it become extremely valuable recruiting pieces. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

O'Pry gives Trinity Christian another young setter developing inside a postseason environment. The sophomore is listed as a setter on the Lions' varsity roster.

The trait I'm most interested in with young setters is adaptability. High-school offenses rarely stay perfectly in system. Setters spend a lot of time working from passes that pull them away from the net, and the ability to make a calm decision from an imperfect starting point becomes one of the clearest separators at the position.

For O'Pry, the recruitment question isn't whether she can set a perfect pass. Most varsity setters can. It's whether she can preserve offensive options after the pass removes some of them.

That means knowing when to push tempo, when to simplify, when to trust a hitter in a difficult matchup and when the smartest choice is simply giving the offense another playable ball. Those are high volleyball-IQ decisions. As she gains repetitions, that's the area that could make her profile considerably more valuable. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Reynolds is a sophomore setter on a North Cobb Christian roster that carried its season into the state playoffs. What makes her interesting from a recruiting standpoint is developmental runway. At this stage, I care less about whether every set is perfectly disguised and more about the habits being established underneath the position.

Does she get her feet to the ball instead of relying on her hands to rescue poor positioning? Does she deliver the same release from multiple locations? Can she keep her tempo consistent when the match speeds up? Those are the technical foundations that eventually allow a setter to become deceptive.

There is also a leadership component that naturally comes with earning varsity setting responsibility this early. A sophomore doesn't have to be the loudest player on the court, but she does have to communicate confidently enough that older hitters trust where the next ball is going. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Oates crossed the 1,000-career-assist mark this season while directing a Buford offense that regularly spread production across multiple attackers. She posted 27 assists against Mill Creek and 20 more in Buford's Senior Night sweep of Dacula. That's where her evaluation gets interesting. A setter's value isn't simply producing assists. It's allowing several hitters to remain legitimate threats.

When an offense can get useful production from the pins and middle, the setter becomes part of the reason the opposing block can't settle into an easy read. Oates also showed useful defensive involvement. In Buford's early-season sweep at GAC, she finished with 11 assists and 13 digs. For recruiters, that matters.

She isn't mentally checking out after releasing the set. She remains part of the rally, and senior setters who understand that complete sequence can bring immediate stability to a college gym. Her experience, distribution responsibility and ability to contribute beyond the second contact give her a profile built on more than a milestone. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Being named First-Team All-Area as a freshman immediately makes Calderone worth a deeper look, particularly because she's handling the setter position for a Fellowship Christian team that won its first Area championship since 2019.

The recruiting value isn't simply that she's young and already playing varsity. It's the responsibility attached to the position. A freshman setter operating in meaningful postseason matches has to process veteran hitters, manage changing pass quality and keep the offense from becoming predictable. That workload accelerates the mental side of the position.

Calderone's next-level ceiling will depend heavily on how sophisticated that decision-making becomes. I want to see whether she can identify favorable matchups before they become obvious, hold opposing middles with her body position and consistently deliver hittable balls when the first contact forces her off the net.

The physical setting skill matters; the volleyball IQ behind the choice matters more. The fact that she's already earning postseason recognition while learning those responsibilities gives her an intriguing developmental profile. ~ Samantha Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga
