I covered some of the players making big noise helping position their team for the playoffs. Now that I've been out there and seen some of the teams play, I wanted to highlight some players that are more under the radar and shouldn't be. Some of these girls are known in the Club scene, but maybe not for HS season. Here are a couple targets to watch:

A sneaky good DS in the 2028 class, Charlotte has been playing and seen for MDJRS, playing on a talented 15s team last year that went to nationals. She got noticed when playing on a team with a current D1 signee, and another that will inevitably sign D1 this year when she's up. She plays a speedy, line to line style, breakneck getting balls up off the floor and is constantly flying around back there. She's got some good teammates that draw a lot of attention, but the first question I ask when I hear about a player doing well are the secondary contributors. How's the setter, and how's the passing? Because there's a sliding scale to things, and anyone can make a decent set and look better than others when the pass is controlled and right on target. But if you are scrambling to play a ball off target on the second ball, it's hard to get a quality chance on the 3rd. Charlotte does her part making sure that the play starts off sound, by staying off the floor, and getting to a spot that the setters can turn it into some offense. She plays for the Sandy Spring Friends School, so she doesn't get the press that the WCAC or IAAM girls get, but she's worth going out of your way to watch her.

Severn Run is in a tightly contested county in a race with the usual contenders tightly bunched and playing each other down the stretch. In the first real "must win" game last night, Kayla was a big contributor helping to pull out a three set win over a tough opponent. Had they lost, the two teams would have been tied for second, now SR is in the driver's seat down the stretch. Kayla played calm and collected all night helping keep the team in rallies, and keep plays going long enough to make a play or for the other team to make an error. Sometimes in good volleyball it's as much about outlasting the other team as it is beating them. Having a Libero that can cover ground and keep you in the game is always key for those, and Kayla looked like a good fit out there. She plays that style of calm, steady lib that plays consistent vs flashy, doing her job to keep balls up and not giving the other team any points. I can give you a long list of players in this same mold that are key on a lot of the teams you watch, but sometimes it's better just to appreciate what you have, because when it's gone, you notice.

This one is a little weird to call under the radar. She's the primary offensive option for Severna Park. But she's just a Soph. and a lot of people still don't know who she is, until you play her that is. She stands out, she's tall, athletic, a multi sport athlete and I'm not sure which her best sport is yet. She uses good arm whip to get big power on the ball, and now that she's refining her timing and putting the pieces together, she's a problem for opposing defenses. She plays on a talented club team for BAVA that went to Nationals last year, with some other top prospects that help share the load, she's really going to shine this year. Keep an eye on her, this is the last time I can get away with calling her under the radar.

This is one of my favorite under the radar players. She had a big leg injury last year and missed a good chunk of game time her freshman year, but she's back out on the court now her Soph. season. She's a fantastic setter. Good hands, speed and agility are off the charts. The defense is Libero level. She's college level easily though, so one of my favorite to promote and I'm working on getting her some more exposure this year. She's not currently ranked on the 2029 lists, but if I were to slot her in among the setters, she'd be somewhere in the top 7 I think. Hoping that she's fully healed from the injury, and looking forward to following her HS run, and to see where she plays club this season. I know there are a few out there that would love to take a run at her and get her some high level exposure.

Naomi started attracting some attention last year in her jump to MDJRS. She showed her left handed power from the right side and caught the eye of a few over the year. I had a couple conversations about her with coaches. She had some good high level instruction last year, and started learning some advanced tips and tricks, and focused a lot on improving her defense. Her team ran a 6-2 so she was getting an even number of reps as the other RS and got on some watch lists with that left handed shot, which is especially dangerous with her cut shot. For HS season she shares the position with Metro standout [player_tooltip player_id='515489' first='Chloe' last='Canetto'] who is committed to Florida State. It's not often a team can brag about having two powerful LH Right Sides, but Northern gets to enjoy that flex for at least the rest of this year.
