All roads converge in Lincoln.

It's here. A final flurry of Halloween district action has given us our quarterfinalists for all six of Nebraska's prep classes. We have the brackets, and we have the storylines to go along with them.

Settle in. These next few days will give us plenty of time to digest all the must-see matchups and can't-miss athletes. The nitty-gritty details are coming, but our first agenda is to get some instant reactions from this stacked postseason field.

The conversation starts here.

Cinderella's Return

Ah, the underdogs.

The district final round seldom goes according to plan, and several "Cinderella" teams have shaken the hierarchy before next week's quarterfinals.

Yutan is back at it again in Class C2. This is the second consecutive season that the Chieftains have claimed the final spot in the C2 bracket. Last year's resurgent effort worked out well, with Yutan scoring a major upset over undefeated Johnson County Central in the opening round.

But this newest breakthrough is perhaps even more stunning. The Chieftains earned a dramatic five-set win against a high-scoring Shelby-Rising City group in the district finals, notching one of the state's biggest upsets of the round. Being the No. 8 seed will not shake Yutan's confidence, especially after 2025's results.

The upset theme persisted in Class C2 with Stanton taking down Johnson County Central in the 7-versus-10 matchup. The visiting Mustangs have been on the cusp of postseason glory for a while, with juniors [player_tooltip player_id='737375' first='Bridget' last='Marotz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='698108' first='Bergan' last='Pohlman'] putting up monster numbers. They'll get a chance to prove themselves against second-seeded Centura in Thursday's quarterfinals.

What about one of our "spooky" upset picks? We flagged the Malcolm-Norfolk Catholic contest as a district final to watch in Class C1, and it gave us more than we bargained for. Just like Yutan, Norfolk Catholic scored the win as the No. 12 seed in a five-set gauntlet on the road. We can't wait to see how these talent-stacked Knights embrace the underdog role after claiming the No. 3 seed last year.

Finally, we have Clarkson in the Class D1 race. The newly rebranded Coyotes had the tall task of taking down a 27-3 Riverside crew in enemy territory. No problem. Once again, a five-set classic got the job done, propelling this group back to Lincoln after several incredible seasons under the Clarkson/Leigh banner.

Late-Season Surges

The wildcard standings evolved a lot over the last few weeks of the regular season. Some late-season stardom played a big part in that shuffle, and several of those surging teams find themselves in the tournament.

Class A has a couple. Lincoln Southwest certainly falls into this category after soaring up the ladder since the beginning of October. The Silver Hawks scored a bevy of mid-season victories before winning the HAC title over Lincoln North Star to close the regular season. This was followed by a district final win over Millard South, launching LSW all the way to the No. 5 seed. Fittingly, a reunion awaits between our HAC finalists from the Star City.

How about Millard North? We had highlighted the Mustangs' recent hot streak, and it panned out in a big way for single-elimination play. Millard North was the lone visitor to win its district, securing a sweep over Papio to lock up a tournament spot. Both will be in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

We'll give a shoutout to York, Class B's No. 8 seed that clawed its way up to the B-7 district. Despite losing in a five-set heartbreaker against Lincoln Pius X, the lack of upsets in Class B's districts put the Dukes back in the big dance.

In with the New

This is our favorite part: bringing in some teams we haven't seen in a while

The small-town scene is full of breakout contenders we'll be eager to see on the postseason stage. We had previously alluded to Bancroft-Rosalie seeking its first postseason berth since 2009. The Panthers are now back in the mix as the No. 6 seed in the D2 bracket.

Tri County has also ended a drought that dated back to 2009. We could have also included the Trojans in our "late-season surge" section, so keep tabs on the DeWitt visitors.

It's been even longer for Wilcox-Hildreth, which hasn't reached the tournament since the two locales consolidated near the turn of the century. Hildreth made its last tournament trip in 2000, while Wilcox made its final breakthrough in 1996. These Falcons might be "ahead of schedule" with several younger contributors in the lineup, making this group even more intriguing.

And this conversation isn't complete without the undefeated Bloomfield Bees. Bloomfield won the 1978 Class C championship and hasn't reached the quarterfinals since. It's only fair that such a multi-decade drought gets terminated by a perfect 29-0 record. That's the way the prep cycle works sometimes.
