LovbLA Players of the PrepDig SoCal UpNext Showcase

The UpNext Showcase gave six athletes the chance to show what that connection looks like on the floor, and each of them answered. She moves well above her age group on defense, and her communication on the court keeps everyone around her organized before the ball even crosses the net. She is automatic once the set goes up front row. She can hit anything sent her way, and she stays intentional with every ball, picking her shot rather than swinging on instinct.   She stays vocal with teammates, making sure everyone knows what sets to run, and she did not let a single over pass go to waste all day. Her hands are clean, and she delivers the ball to whichever hitter has the best chance to score rather than defaulting to a favorite. Her serve was consistent with sharp placement, and her communication kept her offense organized possession after possession.   That kind of decision making, delivering to the hitter with the highest scoring potential instead of the most comfortable one, is exactly what college coaches want to see develop early. Varnika is most excited to watch the level of competition a professional team brings to Los Angeles, alongside some of the best college talent in the country. She strikes with real power, and she reads the moment well enough to time her approach for maximum contact rather than rushing it. She backs that offense up on the other side of the net too. She plays defense like a competitor who refuses to give up on a ball, chasing down everything in her path.   That two way identity, a closer at the net who will not stop working on defense, is the kind of profile that keeps a right side on the court in every rotation. Tapuitea is most excited to see the competition and aggressiveness a professional team will bring to LA. Her elevation stays consistent, and she finishes her attacks with the same aggressive swing every time she gets the ball, not just when the set is perfect. She stays vocal throughout the showcase, and her ball control lets her transition off the net cleanly and get back into system without wasted movement. She is willing to play any position asked of her, and she stays disciplined and quick getting into position on defense, which is what lets her make hard plays look routine. Her reads in serve receive are sharp, and her footwork gets her set before the ball arrives rather than chasing it after the fact.   She plays with an aggressive edge on defense and provides real coverage behind her hitters, and she never stops talking. Her energy stayed consistent throughout the day, and she spent as much time cheering her teammates on as she did making plays herself. She plays with a large, athletic frame and imposes it on every rotation, closing against opposing hitters and setters with power, velocity, and speed that most of the gym could not match. She hustles every play without exception, and that effort shows up as much in transition as it does at the net.   Her defense is just as sharp as her offense. She is quick, she reads the block well, and she covers ground that most players her age are not covering yet. When the ball is hers to finish, she kills it with the kind of assertiveness and skill that reads like an upperclassman, not a middle schooler still building her game.   Zoey is excited to have a local professional team she can watch play so easily, right in her own backyard.
