Freshman rankings are supposed to be difficult.

Players are still growing, positions are still changing and one athlete may look completely different by the time club season ends. That is exactly why varsity performance matters so much. High-school volleyball gives us another environment to see who can handle speed, physicality, responsibility and the pressure that comes when older teammates are actually depending on them.

Several 2030s have made the conversation more complicated this fall.

These aren't necessarily predictions about where anyone will land in the next rankings. They're six freshmen whose varsity seasons have given us more information to consider before the board gets rebuilt.

Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='921772' first='Carolina' last='Morant'] has become the anchor of Norcross' back row, leading the Blue Devils at 4.5 digs per set while also leading the team with 42 aces. MaxPreps.com

Carolina's value starts with range. A libero who covers a lot of court gives everyone beside her permission to play more confidently because the seams become clearer. She also brings another important trait for a freshman defender: she can turn around after spending a rotation absorbing pressure and become aggressive from the service line.

The next step is refining control. The difference between a good high-school defender and a high-level libero isn't simply how many balls she touches. It's how many of those balls arrive somewhere the setter can use them. Carolina is already getting enough volume to develop that precision, which is why her freshman season deserves attention beyond the dig total. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Freshman middle Reese McDuffie gives us a completely different 2030 evaluation. She leads Milton in both hitting percentage at .336 and total blocks with 54. MaxPreps.com

Middle is one of the hardest positions for a young player to fake her way through. Reese has to read the setter, recognize pass quality, decide whether she can stay with the opposing middle and then move laterally fast enough to actually influence the pin. That's a lot of information to process before the attacker ever contacts the ball.

What I like is that Reese's impact is already showing on both sides of the net. The next jump will come through transition speed. Can she land from a block, release quickly and make herself available before the defense resets? If she can pair that offensive availability with the blocking instincts she's already developing, her ceiling becomes significantly more interesting. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Freshman outside [player_tooltip player_id='1021724' first='Aleeah' last='Boller'] currently leads Milton at 3.0 kills per set. More importantly, she's taking those swings inside a varsity lineup where opponents are already learning that she's one of the players they need to slow down. MaxPreps.com

Aleeah plays with good attacking confidence for a freshman. She doesn't look like someone waiting for permission to become an offensive option. But this stage of the season is where the evaluation becomes more interesting because the easy surprise factor is disappearing. Teams have seen her. Blocks are forming earlier. Defenders are beginning to anticipate tendencies.

Now we get to watch how she solves those problems. Can Aleeah use the block instead of always trying to beat it cleanly? Can she stay aggressive after a couple of errors? How much can she improve her serve receive so her offense becomes available in all six rotations? At 5-foot-8, the complete skill set will matter, and she's getting the varsity repetitions to start building it now. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

There are freshmen producing offensively, and then there is Georgia Kate French, who has taken on one of the least forgiving jobs on the court. She has 473 digs in the current statewide leaderboard and leads Alleluia Community at 5.5 digs per set. Earlier this month she had 26 digs in a three-set comeback over Aquinas. MaxPreps.com

What stands out to me about Georgia Kate is the amount of court she is already being trusted to cover. Libero is a difficult place to hide youth because opponents can intentionally serve at you, attackers can recognize hesitation and one late read becomes immediately visible.

Her setter background adds another wrinkle. A defender who understands the second contact usually develops a better feel for what makes a dig actually useful. Getting the ball in the air is step one. Controlling it well enough that the offense can run is the real skill. Georgia Kate's ability to combine defensive volume with ball-handling experience is a big reason she's worth revisiting as the 2030 picture develops. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1039689' first='Claire' last='Yuan'] has already accumulated 529 assists for Norcross, and that's only part of what makes her profile interesting. She is running an offense while playing for a program where the varsity game can get fast quickly, and she has consistently been asked to remain involved defensively rather than operating as a setting-only specialist. MaxPreps.com

Claire's game has a composure to it that matters at this age. Young setters can get rushed when the first contact pulls them away from target. The important developmental question isn't whether every ball is perfect; it's whether the setter can still create something attackable when the rally stops looking like the drill. Claire is already getting a lot of those repetitions.

I also like what her defensive involvement can do for her long term. Setters who understand floor defense tend to transition better because they learn to read the rally before they ever reach the second contact. As her footwork gets cleaner and her offensive choices become more deceptive, Claire has the opportunity to become much more than a high-assist freshman. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

Freshman setter Aaliyah Apollons has been handed a tremendous amount of responsibility immediately. She had 539 assists on the latest statewide leaderboard available to us and already sits among Georgia's overall service leaders with 93 aces. Against Central last week, she finished with 23 assists and eight aces in only two sets. MaxPreps.com

What interests me isn't simply the volume of second contacts. Aaliyah is already learning how to control a match in more than one way. Serving aggressively gives her the ability to create momentum herself, which is important for a setter because so much of the position is normally reactive to the pass she receives. When she gets behind the line, she can become the aggressor.

The next layer of her development will be tempo and deception. As Aaliyah sees stronger blocks, how well can she hold the middle before releasing to the pin? How comfortable is she establishing different hitters rather than simply feeding whichever option has been most productive? Those are advanced questions for a freshman, but the workload she's already carrying means she's going to start answering them earlier than most. ~ S.Fitzgerald @BenchtoBeast_prepdigga

The 2030 board isn't getting easier.

Aaliyah and Claire are already running offenses. Georgia Kate and Carolina are carrying serious first-contact responsibility. Aleeah is becoming a varsity scoring option, and Reese is affecting the center of the net on both sides of the ball.

None of that tells us exactly where six freshmen should appear when the rankings are updated.

It does tell us there is more information now than there was the last time we built the board — and several 2030s are making sure their names stay in the conversation.
