In Division 3, a lot of multi-year setters return to top programs in hopes of leading them back to Battle Creek.
Here’s some of the top setters you will see in Division 3 for 2020.
Kayla Onken, Sr. Schoolcraft
Onken powered the Schoolcraft attack all the way to the Division 3 final in 2019. She compiled over 1,400 assists and also had over 300 digs and 80 aces. The First Team All-State pick will have to step up this year as a senior leader. The Eagles lose a huge offensive weapon in Andelyn Simkins Andelyn Simkins 6'2" | OH Schoolcraft | 2020 State MI , but Onken has the skillset to raise the level of play of her hitters.
Meagan Lasky, Sr. Bronson
The Lasky name has been a constant with the Bronson program for years and Meagan is certainly adding to that family legacy. The senior setter was Second Team All-State in 2019. Her big-match experience is going to come in very handy this season. She has the composure and leadership skills to carry Bronson to another deep playoff run. On top of that, she also sets a great ball.
Mady Pahl, Sr. Beaverton
Beaverton made its first Battle Creek appearance in 2019 and Pahl was a big reason for that. The senior setter was Third Team All-State as a junior, putting up over 1,100 assists. She also had 348 digs and 64 aces. Leading a young offense, Pahl has Beaverton looking like it will be one of the top contenders in Division 3 once again this season.
Alexis Strait Alexis Strait 5'4" | S White Cloud | 2021 MI , Sr. White Cloud
Strait was a bit of a do-everything player for White Cloud as a junior. She earned Third Team All-State honors in 2019 by amassing 601 assists, 391 digs, 189 kills and 89 aces. Strait found a way to make an impact in every facet of the game. Strait’s ability to excel with her setting, passing, serving and spiking make her a complete player.
Hannah Sidorowicz, Sr. Traverse City St. Francis
Sidorowicz has been the reliable foundation of the TC St. Francis offense for multiple years. She is coming off a 2019 that saw her earn Honorable Mention All-State honors and guide the Gladiators to another regional championship. Sidorowicz moves smoothly on the floor, which allows her to keep the St. Francis offense running with high efficiency.
Kylie Bohn Kylie Bohn S Unionville-Sebawaing | 2022 MI , Jr. USA
The Patriots put a lot of trust in Bohn as a sophomore, having her take over their offense. It paid off, as she racked up just under 1,300 assists while helping USA claim another district championship. The Patriots have a lot of expectations for 2020, and having Bohn back is a big reason for that. The junior proved she could handle the pressure last fall. Only bigger things are to come in 2020.
Shelly Urquhart, Jr. Charyl Stockwell
Urquhart was the signal caller for a powerful Charyl Stockwell attack in 2019. The Sentinels reached the Division regional final before falling to eventual champ, SMCC. Urquhart put up nearly 1,100 assists while contributing 171 digs and 50 aces. Her performance was strong for a sophomore and now she looks to increase her contributions as a junior with a lot of confidence.
Sydney Krause, Sr. Valley Lutheran
Valley Lutheran reached Battle Creek for the first time since 1983 last fall. Krause was able to successfully run the Chargers offense, putting up 1,139 assists for the season. Krause has a steady passing game to go along with her top-level setting abilities. Her senior year will be a big one for her, as the Chargers will rely on her experience and leadership.
Honorable Mention: Grace Lipford, Sr. SMCC; Kristi Keranen, Sr. Calumet; Bailey Torpey, Sr. Beal City; Zoe Myers, Sr. Saugatuck; Keleigh Knowles, Sr. Athens; Trista Medina, Sr. Maple Valley; Rosie Bracken, Sr. Liggett.
