In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In the third week of our series, we present Class 2A.
Burlington-Edison
No team has been as solid as Burlington-Edison in the division as of lately. The Tigers have been among the top-eight in class 2A in each of the last ten years, winning five State Championships along the way. The absence of graduated All-State first-team middle-blocker Katie King, the Tigers’ star on their fourth-place campaign last season, will certainly be a problem, but Burlington-Edison still has just enough talent to remain among the division’s elite.
Their three key players are:
Amey Rainaud – Setter – Junior
Amey Rainaud was an integral part of Burlington-Edison’s success last season as she was easily one of the top setters in the division with impressive 921 assists. The 5’6” prospect also offered significant contributions to the Tigers in other areas as she was the team’s top server with 67 aces, ranked fourth in defense with 297 digs and added 45 kills. Rainaud has been a solid piece for Burlington-Edison, getting back-to-back All-State second-team nominations in the last two seasons.
Gabriella Mackenzie – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Gabriella Mackenzie was Burlington-Edison’s second-most used offensive option in 2019, a season in which she had a career-high 189 kills. The six-footer is expected to be fed even more balls next season in the absence of fellow middle-blocker King and she will have a chance to become also the team’s go-to scorer after leading the Tigers in blocks last season with 51.
Jordyn Smith – Outside Hitter – Junior
Jordyn Smith is another player expected to step up and increase her offensive contributions to Burlington-Edison’s system next season. After registering 56 kills in 2019, the 5’7” outside hitter will be handed a more central role with the Tigers and should also be able to post higher numbers in other skills such as serving (11 aces in 2019), blocking (ten) and digging (101).
