In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In the third week of our series, we present Class 2A.
Washington
Washington will get into next season with elevated morale after the team had its best-ever campaign in the division in 2019, a third-place finish at the State Championship. The Patriots had a division-record three players in last year’s All-State first team, but only one of them, setter Noelani Souza, which means some of their younger talents will be asked to step up their production for the team.
Their three key players are:
Noelani Souza – Setter – Senior
Noelani Souza’s solid game helped seniors Moeshava Maiava and Eliana Luteru making it to the All-State first team for a second consecutive season in 2019. The Washington setter was very precise with her ball distribution, handing out 291 assists in only 40 sets (7.3) for the Patriots and also earning an All-State first-team nod herself. Outside of that, the 5’3” prospect also added 72 points for her team between kills (35), aces (35) and blocks (2).
Sirena Peredo – Outside Hitter – Sophomore
Sirena Peredo was part of Washington’s lethal offensive trio last season with Maiava and Luteru and she managed to be the team’s top scorer on her freshman year with 114 kills. The 5’6” outside hitter showed much more than just her offensive power as she led the Patriots in aces (41), digs (138) and passes (82), making it to the All-State second team.
Zoelene Niuamoa – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Zoelene Niuamoa did a fine job in pairing up with Luteru in the middle of the net for Washington. The 5’8” prospect took care of her blocking duties, leading the Patriots in that department with 45 points in 36 sets (1.3) per set while also contributing in other areas with 52 kills, ten aces and 46 digs.
