First we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
The fourth district we address is 1A Nisqually, which has nine high schools set to compete, and some of their players with the greatest upside are:
Isabella Irregui – Outside Hitter – Sophomore – Annie Wright
Annie Wright displayed a promising freshman group last season which helped the team winning four of its ten matches in the district. Among them was outside hitter Isabella Irregui, who impressed with a great all-around game. The 5’6” prospect was strong on offense, ranking third in the team’s scoring chart with 83 kills, but even better on the defensive side of the game, leading the Gators’ backcourt game with 231 digs and 178 passes. An All-League first-team selection, the newcomer also registered 32 aces.
Kendall Saalfeld – Outside Hitter – Senior – Charles Wright
District leaders Charles Wright strongly benefited from Kendall Saalfeld’s game in 2019. The 5’9” outside hitter played an important role in the team’s offensive system, being the Tarriers second-best scorer behind star senior Nicole Kelly with 127 kills. Saalfeld, an All-League second-team member, also contributed to the team’s successful campaign with 22 aces, 21 blocks, 160 digs and 56 assists.
Rae Wartelle – Middle-Blocker – Sophomore – Annie Wright
Rae Wartelle was another of Annie Wright’s new faces to absolutely flourish in 2019. The six-foot middle-blocker had a massive impact at the net, as expected, leading the Gators in both kills with 123 and blocks with 56. The freshman also added 16 aces and contributed to the team’s backcourt efforts impressively with 154 digs and 168 passes, deservedly finding her way to the All-League second team.
