Deciding who was number one was not an easy decision and could go to any of these players and will probably change multiple times before these young ladies graduate! Remember, these are just freshman and all of them are on their own learning and growing curves!
#1 Lauren Medeck Lauren Medeck 5'10" | OH Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State #31 Nation NE (pictured above)- This time around the 5’11 outside hitter from Papillion-LaVista South gets the nod for the #1 spot. Having the most kills on a team that went 29-6 and a runner-up finish in the Class A State Tournament, pushed her to the top spot. Coach Katie Tarman commented on Lauren at the beginning of the season, “She is a fantastic kid and we are lucky to have her in our program. She is incredibly coachable and is quickly adapting to the speed of our game and the way our program operates. She is very physical and has tremendous body control at this young age.”
Medeck finished the season with 3.2 kills/set (307 season) and .6 blocks/set (56 season). Away from the net she had 1.1 digs/set and 1.1 receptions/set. At the beginning of the season Lauren commented that she wanted to be a go to hitter on the floor and to be a consistent threat for her team and she did just that!
#2 Reagan Hickey Reagan Hickey 5'8" | S Papillion-La Vista | 2024 State NE – The 5’8 setter from Papillion LaVista moves up from #4 to #2. Another player that’s team made it to the Class A State Semifinals and finished with a 22-10 record. She took over the reigns in the setter spot. With the likes of seniors Norah Sis (2021, Creighton Recruit), Morgan Hickey Morgan Hickey 5'10" | MB Papillion-LaVista | 2021 State NE , and Logan Jeffus Logan Jeffus 6'0" | OH Papillion-LaVista | 2021 State NE to set it to, the freshman posted 1,057 assists her first season. She definitely contributed everywhere else on the court too – 30 ace serves on 97.6% serving, 22 blocks, and 2.4 digs/set.
#3 Reese Booth Reese Booth 5'7" | S Elkhorn North | 2024 State NE – From #20 to #3. As we have a plethora of setters in this class look for the 5’7 Booth from Elkhorn North to guide her team into the schools future. With the Wolves program just started at the newly formed school, expect Reese to be a mainstay on the record boards for years to come. Reese guided her team of freshman and sophomores to a .203 hitting efficiency and had 8.9 assists/set. The team started off slow but gained momentum to a 13-18 record and district final appearance.
#4 Carolyn Maser Carolyn Maser 6'1" | S Grand Island Central Catholic | 2024 State NE – The 6’0 Maser was highly touted by coach Sharon Zavala to begin the season and definitely lived up to all the expectations! She guided her team to a 24-4 record with 9.7 assists/set with her team hitting .293. She served 94.6% with 23 aces. Carolyn attended the Nebraska Top 250 Expo in December and definitely stood out on the freshman court! All around great court awareness! She should be on many college coaches’ recruitment lists!
#5 Kyla Dyrstad Kyla Dyrstad 5'6" | S Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State NE – At 5’3 this freshman helped run a 6-2 system for the 19-13 Bellevue West Thunderbirds and a Class A State Tournament appearance, the first since 2006. Switching uniforms next season to Royal Blue and Silver, look for Dyrstad to find a new role on the team, perhaps more defensive. Kyla plays club volleyball with Premier.
A NOTE ABOUT RANKINGS
Player rankings are a constant work in progress, especially with athletes at the 15s and 16s level. Some players hit their stride at different times and for others, it’s a matter of getting their chance whether it’s high school or club. We seek feedback from coaches around the state and are always looking to add names as well as update information. For the players, your ranking does not define you. This is a list that is a resource for schools, it’s fun to see athletes from across the state, and is a great way to connect players with each other as well as coaches throughout the country.
