Some of the state’s most popular names in the high school volleyball scene have confirmed the high expectations about themselves, producing another season of elite-level performances while some freshmen have also started their careers in the best possible way.
There’s also a third category which is absolutely worth following, which is the one with players who are having career years. These prospects have been with their teams for a season or two but have never produced at the level they are this time around.
We’ll list some of those players during the week, starting with the setters:
Madison Brauner Madison Brauner 5'5" | S Emerald Ridge | 2023 State WA – HS: Emerald Ridge – 2023
A junior, Madison Brauner Madison Brauner 5'5" | S Emerald Ridge | 2023 State WA saw her role with Emerald Ridge grow over the years. Even though the season is still ongoing, it’s already the one in which she remained on the court for longer, as the 54 sets she played in 2021 are the most in her career. More playing time has resulted in a higher production for the 5’6” setter, who saw her averages of assists (3.6 to 8.6), digs (1.6 to 1.7) and kills (0.1 to 0.5) per set all increase. She has 463 assists, 93 digs, 28 kills and 12 aces registered so far this season.
Macey Gines – HS: Mary Walker – 2023
Macey Gines’ production for Mary Walker has been there in each of her first two seasons of high school volleyball, but it got even better in 2021. The 5’3” setter has improved her connection with the team’s star hitter Audrey Wellhausen and that has had a positive impact in her overall game. This season, Gines has been at the top of her game, producing the highest averages per set of her career in assists (8.5), digs (1.3) and kills (0.3). Her totals this season are currently at 434 assists, 65 digs, 40 aces and 17 kills.
Clara Sun – HS: Overlake – Club: Puget Sound Volleyball Academy – 2023
A precocious talent, Clara Sun started her high school volleyball career back in 2017, as an eighth-grader. Capable of playing as a defensive specialist or a setter, she has established herself in the latter position and has proven to be a great fit there. This year, the 5’5” Sun has been at her best in assists (8.3 per set), aces (0.6) and kills (0.2). Her production for Overlake has been of 347 assists, 25 aces, 24 digs and ten kills as of now.
