Yesterday, we started to look at some of Nebraska’s prep athletes who are returning to the high school stage to add to some impressive stat totals. Outside hitters were first in the spotlight, and we featured impressive talent from a variety of classes and school sizes.
Expect the same here as we check out a few of the state’s best stat-stuffing setters.
Baker’s command of the setter spot helped Bergan reach the Class D1 state championship last fall, and this fierce competitor will be looking for more in 2022. She will have no shortage of talented hitters to set, either. Exceeding last season’s 8.5 assists per set is not a stretch for Baker, so keep this senior setter on your radar.
Schuster has been leading the Aurora offense since her arrival on the varsity squad as a freshman. Her stat line took a big leap in 2021, and now Schuster brings some senior leadership in what could be a very strong year for the Huskies.
We just put Festersen in the Nebraska rankings with our latest Class of 2023 update, so she already has our attention during preseason. Omaha Central can make some strides this year with Festersen leading the offense, even as this versatile athlete showed her skills as a libero during the club season.
Filling up the stat sheet is just another autumn pastime for Hickey. She has regularly been at the top of Nebraska’s assists leaderboards since the dawn of her prep career. Hickey’s junior season will probably yield her best numbers yet as she sets a Papillion-La Vista offense that is really starting to find its groove.
Bartley’s Southwest High School gets another stat stuffer on the board with the setters. Lampe isn’t just valuable for her ability to dish the ball, as she has also put up some impressive dig totals that have steadily climbed throughout her career.
Kirkendall’s contributions have helped put Fall City High School on the map after a solid 24-7 overall record for the Tigers last year. She put up nearly eight assists per set last season and ranks high among her peers in the 2024 class.
We’re visiting the capital city now for another North Star athlete with a lot to gain this fall. Lottman had a good 2021 campaign with the Navigators and has no shortage of talent hitters to set in a pursuit to build her totals. Keep an eye on her squad in the coming months.
Highlights
O’Hare has one of the most unique roles of any player that we’ll feature on this series. She’s included in the setter feature, but she also played some middle blocker in the frontcourt to supplement her back row setter role for Gothenburg. That fascinating dichotomy took centerstage at the state championships last year, and I can’t wait to see O’Hare light up the stat sheet again.
Let’s revisit a setter who had arguably the best freshman season among all of Nebraska’s 2025s. Yes, Rennerfeldt piled up assists at an amazing rate, but she’ll probably be more excited about the Class C2 state championship that Oakland-Craig earned last November.
Ashland-Greenwood has played plenty of quality volleyball lately, and Craven is an athlete who can help keep that trend going into the future. It might be tough for a freshman setter to step in and handle that kind of pressure, but this 2025 athlete never seemed intimidated.
