Cedar Run
Battlefield (11-1) won the Cedar Run after their win on Thursday over Patriot, the second five set victory over the Pioneers. The Bobcats only loss was to Freedom. Battlefield has some pop on offense with juniors Grace Bianchi Grace Bianchi 5'7" | OH Battlefield | 2024 State VA and Taelin Connolley Taelin Connolley 5'7" | OH Battlefield | 2024 State VA from the left side and sophomore Skyler Tennant Skyler Tennant 5'11" | RS Battlefield | 2025 State VA smashing lasers from the right. Junior middle Brianna Clay Brianna Clay 6'2" | MB Battlefield | 2024 State VA gives them length up the middle. Jaelle Savannah Hinkle Jaelle Savannah Hinkle 5'8" | DS/L Battlefield | 2024 VA is a steady libero and the setters job is shared by juniors Melorra Arthur Melorra Arthur 5'7" | S Battlefield | 2024 State VA and Aava Shingler Aava Shingler 5'5" | DS/L Battlefield | 2024 State VA . This team only loses two seniors so if it is not this year it could be next year.
Patriot (11-2) is just the opposite with the loss of their two senior left sides Dryden Rancourt Dryden Rancourt 5'11" | OH Patriot | 2023 State VA and Aria White Aria White 5'7" | OH Patriot | 2023 State VA , plus their middle Makiya Williams Makiya Williams MB Patriot | 2023 State VA for next year. This trio appeared to be the bulk of their offense, with Dryden their leader in kills. Her younger sister frosh Soleil Rancourt Soleil Rancourt 6'2" | OH Patriot | 2026 State VA hits from the right side and is second on the team in kills. It would not surprise me if she moves to the left side next year. The two setters Anisa Flowers Anisa Flowers 5'3" | S Patriot | 2025 State VA and Lauren Katz Lauren Katz 5'11" | S Patriot | 2024 State VA are very talented with good tempo to their sets. Lauren is critical to the team offense as she hits from the right side and is third on the team in kills. They do have frosh Sydney Bennett to cover one of the middles. The libero Lanie Goff Lanie Goff 5'7" | DS/L Patriot | 2024 State VA will return for another season. Their only two District losses were to Battlefield. They beat the defending champs Freedom twice.
We have yet to see Freedom (8-3) play, but last year they earned a spot in the State championship but eventually lost to Colgan in three. Some familiar names on the team include middle Caitlin Johnson Caitlin Johnson 6'5" | MB Freedom | 2025 State VA , outside hitter Emma Kerwin Emma Kerwin 6'1" | OH Freedom (South Riding) | 2023 State VA and libero Payton Delean Payton Delean DS/L Freedom | 2023 State VA .
My pick at the start of the season – Battlefield
Cardinal
Defending Class 6 State champion Colgan (10-0) have run away with this District. They have yet to lose a set this year from a team from Virginia. The Player of the Year from last year Brielle Kemavor Brielle Kemavor 6'5" | MB Charles J. Colgan | 2023 State #148 Nation VA again leads this team with her play up the middle. Senior setter Alexis Scipione Alexis Scipione 5'9" | S Colgan | 2023 State VA runs the offense distributing her sets to an array of weapons. Outsides Aubrey Hatch Aubrey Hatch 6'1" | OH Colgan | 2024 State VA , Skylar Johnson and Kezia Francis Kezia Francis 5'9" | OH Charles Colgan | 2023 State VA share the load with Brielle to carry this offense. Paula Sigurani Paula Sigurani 5'4" | DS/L Colgan | 2024 State VA provides the perfect passes and stout defense.
Forest Park (8-2) could almost match Colgan in height. Their only two district losses were against Colgan. That height is led by the 6’3″ Jasmine Okeoma Jasmine Okeoma 6'3" | MB Forest Park | 2023 State VA , who plays one of the middles and leads the team in blocks. Destini Pickett Destini Pickett 5'10" | OH Forest Park | 2025 State VA is a 5’8″ high flying outside with a big arm and better wrist snap who leads the team in kills as a sophomore. Natalie Brown Natalie Brown 5'9" | RS Forest Park | 2023 State VA and Zoe Strachan Zoe Strachan 6'0" | RS Forest Park | 2024 State VA share right side duties and are second and third in kills. Kristina Diaz Kristina Diaz 5'4" | DS/L Forest Park | 2023 State VA provides crisp passes in her libero role.
My pick at the start of the season – Colgan
Patriot
It was a two team race that has been won by the experience of the Robinson Rams (12-0), who have a roster filled with seniors. They shut down the two time defending champ Alexandria City twice. Rylah Robinson Rylah Robinson 5'10" | OH J. W. Robinson | 2023 State VA powers this offense from the left side. Paige Meins Paige Meins 5'9" | S Robinson | 2023 State VA controls the pace of the game with her setting. Bryton Hill Bryton Hill 6'2" | RS Robinson | 2023 State VA and Rosina Parker Rosina Parker OH Robinson | 2023 VA are two other senior outsides who contribute to the offense. The only non senior in the starting lineup is sophomore middle Georgia Simonsen Georgia Simonsen 6'1" | MB Robinson | 2025 VA .
The only two losses on the year for Alexandria City (11-2) have been to Robinson. They have two departing seniors who are All State players in setter Chloe Wilmot Chloe Wilmot 5'9" | S Alexandria City | 2023 State VA and outside Milan Rex Milan Rex 5'11" | S Alexandria City | 2023 State #147 Nation VA . Their other outside junior Bridie Wendling Bridie Wendling 5'10" | OH Alexandria City | 2024 State VA has been contributing to the offense, easing the work load for Milan, who averages close to 6 kills per set. The big blocker in the middle is Annalie McCarthy Annalie McCarthy 6'0" | MB Alexandria | 2023 State VA . Zana Royster Zana Royster 5'6" | DS/L Alexandria City | 2025 VA is a top notch libero.
My pick at the start of the season – Alexandria City
Liberty
Langley (11-0) is dominating this conference and will be one of the favorites to win the Class 6 States. They are led by setter Chloe Hokenson Chloe Hokenson 6'1" | S Langley | 2024 State VA , who can also hit right side and offers a mean serve. The outside tandem of Ana Toumazatos Ana Toumazatos 6'1" | OH Langley | 2025 State VA , Riley Buddie Riley Buddie 6'1" | OH Langley | 2024 State VA , Sophia Galova Sophia Galova 5'10" | OH Langley | 2023 State VA and Leni Stanton-Parker Leni Stanton-Parker 6'0" | OH Langley | 2025 State #116 Nation VA may be the deepest in Class 6. Leni also provides strength at the middle when she is not hitting outside. Frosh Claire Mo is a solid setter giving Chloe an opportunity to hit right side. Erica Maebius Erica Maebius 5'3" | DS/L Langley | 2023 State VA is a steady libero that makes all the plays. This team is stacked with talent.
Marshall (6-3) gave the Saxons a good run but fell short. They have a dominant outside in Samia Sayd Samia Sayd 5'11" | OH Marshall | 2024 State VA , who provides the bulk of their offense. Marie Kah Marie Kah 6'0" | MB Marshall | 2023 State VA is a strong middle who can put up a good block. The setting chores are shared by Brooke Bundy Brooke Bundy 5'7" | S Marshall | 2024 VA and Emmie Tran. Emily Kim Emily Kim RS Marshall | 2025 VA and Isabella Tran Isabella Tran 5'9" | S Marshall | 2025 VA come in for them to provide offense on the right side. Madison Curcio Madison Curcio 5'8" | OH Marshall | 2023 State VA is a smaller left side with a good vertical that teams can not overlook. This is a scrappy team that knows how to keep the ball alive.
The defending champions Herndon (5-3) were still a force in the conference despite the loss of player of the year Akasha Anderson. Phoebe Adams Phoebe Adams 5'10" | OH Herndon | 2023 State VA takes most of the load from the left side. Sophomore setter Shylah Swope Shylah Swope 5'10" | S Herndon | 2025 State VA could keep this team contending for the next couple years with her ability to mash from the right side and her sweet hands that consistently feed the hitters. Frosh Piper Xeller can fill the middle role or move outside. The 6’2″ junior Gabriella Majer Gabriella Majer 6'2" | RS Herndon | 2024 VA gives the Hornets some height on the right side but is still a bit raw.
My pick at the start of the season – Langley
Chesapeake Chirps: Bullis pulled off an upset in the Independent Schools League (ISL) last week by sweeping Georgetown Day. Next, they face Flint Hill this week….Rock Ridge appears to have won the Dulles District with a sweep over 10 time defending Class 4 State Champions Loudoun County. It was their second sweep over the Captains but this time it was in the Loudoun County gym….Oakton pulled off a critical win over James Madison to keep a share of the lead in the Concorde District.
