This year’s state tournament offered the perfect conclusion to Johnson’s breakout junior season. She had already established herself as a terminal force in the Malcolm frontcourt, but she took a considerable step forward by hitting well north of 0.300 this fall. Her volume also increased to 2.5 kills per set, and Johnson got the job done in the middle and on the right. The Clippers made a late-season charge to reach the postseason and knocked off a Lincoln Lutheran juggernaut in the Star City. What a perfect precursor to 2026.

The Dolliver duo rightfully draws a lot of attention in the Malcolm lineup, but Johnson has distinguished herself as a new force to be reckoned with. She pounded down 18 kills on a 0.389 clip as the sixth-seeded Clippers toppled four-time defending state champion Lincoln Lutheran. A full team effort is needed to pull off such a feat, so Johnson’s emergence on the right side was paramount. Malcolm got everything it needed and a little bit more.

We could have gone the “safe” route and chosen one of the Dolliver sisters, both of whom were phenomenal and produced double-double performances. However, we can’t leave Johnson out of the picture when discussing Malcolm’s extraordinary five-set upset over Lincoln Lutheran. Johnson emerged as a go-to scorer on the right side and fortified the Clipper block against Lutheran’s outside hitters. This was a complete effort to take down the four-time defending champs.

Malcolm’s outside attackers draw plenty of attention in opposing scouting reports, but Johnson has long been an unsung hero for the Clippers. The six-foot-two athlete has accumulated a career-best 226 kills this season and is the anchor to a stifling Malcolm net presence. Her club experience with VCNebraska is paying off, too.

Johnson has been under the microscope since she was a freshman last year. Now, the sophomore middle blocker is going after back-to-back tournament appearances with Malcolm. She has recently eclipsed triple-digit terminations in the 2024 campaign and is putting up a solid 0.225 hitting percentage. When the Clippers nail a good pass, Johnson is a safe bet to swing in any of her frontcourt rotations. Her range has expanded in Year 2 as Malcolm navigates a challenging Class C1 slate.

It was hard to miss Johnson in this fall’s Malcolm frontcourt. The dominant middle blocker pitched in with nearly two kills per set and was an immediate shutdown blocker for the Clippers. This sudden influx of physicality helped bring Malcolm back to the state tournament in 2023, and there’s more to come from Johnson during the club season. She will help expand on the historic Malcolm-VCN pipeline and compete with 15 Elite this spring.

Malcolm is making a habit of trotting out some transformative freshmen. Johnson was this year’s dominant first-year player to keep an eye on, as the physical middle had a team-best 65 blocks in the regular season and backed that up with nearly 200 kills. Her length creates some serious matchup problems–even for Class C1’s tournament-worthy squads. The Clippers are building a roster that should be formidable for years to come, and Johnson now lies at the center of that development.
