What I really enjoy about the January tournaments is being able to see athletes that I know have had a good high school season, have earned honors, improved in the past year, and get to the club season and it's like, “Whoa, what an improvement” or “Who is that?”. For me it takes a bit to adjust when they are with different teammates and a different jersey. Here are some names that I have seen play before and have shown an improvement or names that are just brand new and saw play live for the first time. Either way, put them on the radar!

[player_tooltip player_id='181819' first='McKenna' last='Oetzman'] - JAG 18 National

This Class of 2024 setter is the catalyst to so many great things for this JAG 18 National team who won the 17/18 Club Division. They survived two three set thrillers against Sting 17 White over the weekend. This group is out of the Wisconsin Dells area with a lot of sneaky good, potential college talent. Oetzman preps at Reedsburg and her game starts with really good footwork. She's quick, she gets her feet to the ball and is able to get her hands on everything. I spoke briefly with Oetzman after a match to get a “Top Performer” picture and she's looking to play college ball. I was so impressed with her athleticism, skill, and all the positive intangibles with her team.

[player_tooltip player_id='497930' first='Jenna' last='Vermillion'] - JAG 18 National

So explosive. We had a large number of All State athletes where [player_tooltip player_id='497930' first='Jenna' last='Vermillion'] was a 1st Team All State pick from Fall River where they advanced to the D4 state tournament. The six rotation outside hitter from the Class of 2025 was scoring a lot of points. She has an aggressive approach and violent arm swing that is tough to stop. Her consistency throughout the tournament was key to the success for JAG. She is one that is a sleeper in the 2025 class and is definitely on the radar.

[player_tooltip player_id='497922' first='Maren' last='Motz'] - MKE Sting 17 White

Motz was one of the hardest hitting outsides in the 17/18 Club Division. She has a ton of pop on her swing and a really fast arm. When Sting was in system, Motz was a key outlet where she could find the open spot or swing hard and tool the block. I was really impressed with her aggressive mindset when it comes to attacking. She will be leading the Sting 17 White team to the Northern Lights Qualifier this weekend where I think they could make a run for some big day three matches.

[player_tooltip player_id='209438' first='Avery' last='Lang'] - [program_tooltip program_id='428659' first='Wisconsin' last='Blaze'] 17 Black

[program_tooltip program_id='428659' first='Wisconsin' last='Blaze'] as a club has shown some great improvement as a club with more teams and teams who are placing higher at events. [player_tooltip player_id='209438' first='Avery' last='Lang'] is a key outside hitter for [program_tooltip program_id='428659' first='Wisconsin' last='Blaze'] 17 Black where she is extremely dynamic and uber athletic. Lang is a junior at Freedom High School and is building off a stellar high school season. She can hit the hard cross, go down the line, and is a key piece to the serve receive scheme. I think she can play at the next level and has shown great on court intangibles.

[player_tooltip player_id='181735' first='Halie' last='Kapelke'] - Elevate 18 Frozen Flamingos

Teams who have a right side who can score and defend adds such a different dimension when the other side of the net has to be aware from pin to pin. Kapelke had a successful career at Onalaska out of the La Crosse area. This past weekend she showed that she could score points and be a big time block. This Elevate team out of Tomah finished in the final four of the 17/18 Club Division.

[player_tooltip player_id='202184' first='Braylin' last='Bosetski'] - [program_tooltip program_id='428591' first='FC' last='Elite'] 17 White

Bosetski just glides on the floor, she moves extremely well and is always in good position to receive the ball. The libero has great command of the backcourt and is rock solid in serve receive. She has all the skills with great platform awareness, athleticism, and range. She would be one to star on UA at the Northern Lights Qualifier this season because she would be a great next level pick up at the libero position.

Kalyn Scheuller - [program_tooltip program_id='428591' first='FC' last='Elite'] 17 White

Scheuller was a big time outside for [program_tooltip program_id='428591' first='FC' last='Elite'] 17 White where she was able to score plenty of points. She has a lot of pop on her swing, but she has really expanded her offensive game. She was mixing in roll shots over the block, thumb up swings down the line, and using the block to her advantage. As athletes move up in age groups, it's going to take a variety of shots to score points at a high level. Scheuller is showing promise to being an all around scorer.

[player_tooltip player_id='178270' first='Ellie' last='Bruns'] - MKE Sting 17 Black

Steady, dependable, consistent, and a really high IQ - [player_tooltip player_id='178270' first='Ellie' last='Bruns'] is a libero that needs to be on the radar to college coaches. This Sting 17 Black squad has a lot of new pieces coming together and it always blends a little better when you have a dependable libero to provide a consistent first contact and is always in good position to put up a solid second ball. This team will be in Minneapolis at NLQ and they have a chance to turn some heads. There will also be some of the top D2 teams in the country recruiting this weekend and I'm sure they will tune into their court.

Makenna Pouillie - JAG 18 National

Pouillie was an athletic and physical presence as a middle blocker for JAG 18 National. She connected extremely well with her setter, MaKenna Oetzman where she was swinging to the deep corner combined with tips and throws. Her block was impressive as well. She knew how to position herself to not only set a strong block, but avoid getting tooled and also transitioning to score points.

[player_tooltip player_id='359927' first='Michelyn' last='Hansen'] - Elevate Odd Ducks

Another 1st Team All State player from this fall, [player_tooltip player_id='359927' first='Michelyn' last='Hansen'] was one of the top setters in D4 from Hillsboro High School. She was a major standout this past weekend at the Resolution where her team had plenty of 2025 talent. I was impressed by how she received the ball, her positioning, and how she connected with her middles. This team had a great vibe and they are full of a lot of great athletes where I think they can win some big matches this club season.

[player_tooltip player_id='249626' first='Addison' last='Foor'] - Elevate Odd Ducks

Foor preps at La Crosse Aquinas and is another All State athlete where she is a do it all outside hitter. She really stood out at the Wisconsin Top 250 in December and she did it again this past weekend at the Resolution. She gets better each time I see her take the floor. Her length and hops are impressive and now she is developing some high level skill to go with her athleticism. The ceiling on her game is extremely high.

[player_tooltip player_id='504019' first='Jada' last='Strohman'] - Iowa One 17u Ally

Iowa One comes from the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area where they showed plenty of athleticism and all around skill in the Open division. Strohman was a big time spark for this team as the libero where she is like a little water beetle on the court, darting from spot to spot to pick up the first contact or putting up a hittable ball with her second contact. Strohman preps at Cedar Falls High School where they are an Iowa large school powerhouse consistently making it to the state tournament.

[player_tooltip player_id='501939' first='Brielle' last='Volker'] - Iowa One 17u Ally

I wrote about Volker in the “Gamechanger” article yesterday, but she is definitely a name that was one to know at the Resolution and will be one to know for her senior year at Sumner-Fredericksburg High School just outside Waterloo/Cedar Falls. Volker has all the fundamentals and is someone who has a knack for scoring. She was a starting outside hitter for a state tournament team this past fall.

Kirsten Klatt - [program_tooltip program_id='428646' first='Spiketown' last='USA'] 17.1

Klatt is a major presence along the front row for Spiketown where she has the length and physicality to cause some problems with her block and swing. She has to be around 6'2 and makes great hand contact with the ball, putting a great pop on it. Her upside is definitely up there and has a lot of potential not only for this club season, but beyond. She preps at Oshkosh West who had quite a few standouts at the Resolution.
