Teams that managed at least one win in pool play on Friday headed into the second day of the Bluegrass Games with hopes of winning the gold alive.

Others tried to take advantage of their second chances after going 1-1 on Friday. Those teams generally needed to win all three pool play games on Saturday at the respective sites to advance to the championship flight on Sunday at Henry Clay in Lexington.

That generally happened, except in the case of Pool HH. Corbin and Male went 2-1 in pool play, but Corbin won the head-to-head to advance to the championship flight. Thirteen teams enter the final day of the Bluegrass Games undefeated at 5-0. Conner, Bullitt East, Highlands and Greenup County took down two top seeds in their respective pools to make it to the championship round. Highlands beat defending 8th Region champion Oldham County and Conner beat defending 16th Region champion Boyd County with Greenup County besting defending 15th Region champion Johnson Central.

The teams from the field of 106 that did not manage any wins that first day tried to find some preseason momentum before leaving town. Coaches will say this is the time to be trying to see what works and what does not.

A number of players stood out helping the teams make it to the championship flight.

Hansel (pictured) has stepped into a huge role for the Raiders as the result of a graduation and seems to be handling it well consistently trying to improve. Hansel consistently moves her feet trying to square up her arms and hands with balls. Hansel also tracks down tipped balls with ease. Well-struck balls do not phase her as they carom off her arms to setters for nice passes. Hansel has a tough diving serve to the right line that can be tough to handle.

Taylor's presence helps create things for her teammates as she is one of many teams have to account for as part of Central Hardin's smooth offensive attack. Taylor takes sharp, precise swings. She can hit to the opposite line and win jousts at the net. Taylor also forms solid double blocks at the net. If balls are not blocked, they are tipped up for a teammate to pass and get Central Hardin into the offensive set.

Koerber and her teammates are ready to surprise a number of people this year. Koerber is trying to become a solid all-around player. She spent a lot of club season setting and showed she can do a number of them from the cross-court, short and back sets. She's even thrown in setter dumps. Koerber hustles on defense and her serving came a long way during club season. In limited action on varsity as a freshman, Koerber showed she can bring a lot to the table as a hitter. She has a sharp shot down the line and can smack it to the opposite corner.

Turner is learning how to control the net with her size. She constantly uses it offensively to hit balls over, around and off blockers. This includes short sets in the middle and slide shots. Turner does a great job working individually and with teammates timing things at the net with blocks. Turner's dedication has landed her a spot on Lexington's All City Team two years in a row.

Cox is one of many Bluebirds that grew during veteran head coach Jim DeLong's first season guiding the team. She does a great job quarterbacking the team, consistently reading defenses and putting teammates in solid position to put balls down. Cox is not afraid to put in setter dumps when the option is there. Cox showed she can win jousts at the net. Cox also gives the Bluebirds options as a hitter with a nice swing.
