About Yemaya

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I play to win and consistently work at all times to be the best possible version of my capabilities.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

My coaches have described me as a leader both on and off the court with a strong work ethic and ability to bring out the best in those around me. I am proud to have earned the trust and respect of my teammates and coaches. I have also been described as having a sponge-like ability to pick up and learn new skills quickly. I am coachable and at the same time a self-starter.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I was selected as class representative and featured speaker for Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences moving up ceremony. I received the Shakespeare Festival Award. I am have been involved in Project Scientist, Black Film Festival Student Leadership, Visual Art Classes, Student Ambassador Program, and Girl Scouts of America.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I am a student leader volunteer for This is About Humanity. I participate in their community service events. In addition, I co-founded a nonprofit organization that provides containers as resources for clean water access for students in villages within Ethiopia.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I feel like I have been very blessed to have a loving and supportive family. I do not take that for granted and know there are so many challenges that people my age face daily.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for a college with a strong academic environment and a well rounded, competitive opportunity for high level volleyball as a collegiate scholar.

Yemaya is a Class of 2029 athlete at Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences and competes with Actyve Volleyball.

Touching 10 feet was both a physical and mental battle for Yemaya Chappell Yemaya Chappell Yemaya Chappell 6'3" | MB/RS Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences | 2029 CA . Inspired by watching her older brother practice dunks with their dad, she eventually made her own full-circle breakthrough at Actyve Volleyball. “When I first started vertical practice I was stuck in my head because I didn’t believe I could do it,” she said. “But once I started thinking I could, it became easier and easier to reach my goal.” Yemaya remembers finally hitting 10 feet at the YMCA with her dad, after long stretches of frustration. Now, she uses that confidence to dominate above the net. “I am able to hit more angles, get on top of the ball, hit above blocks and not just around them, as well as reaching more over the net which makes my block more effective,” she explained, proving how her vertical directly impacts her game. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247
