Tristan Del Riego Tristan Del Riego 5'9" | S/RS Mira Costa | 2029 State CA is a sophomore setter and opposite who plays both indoor and beach for Mira Costa varsity. In April, we named her our Social Media Star of the Week in a piece on setters controlling tempo. She told us she was proud of her court awareness, her reading on defense, and her communication and leadership.

We asked Tristan what skills she has worked on the most this season and what this season has taught her as a sophomore.

Tristan’s Voice
“Skills I have worked on most are the offensive power of a well-placed serve, having several serves (top spin, deep float…) in my arsenal, and maintaining strong court/team energy. The number one thing this season taught me is the power to come together and rise up as a team. Our class of 2027 did a really amazing job in bringing this team together so smoothly and experiencing the fun and power of that has been the best part of this season and something I will take with me for when I’m an upperclassman.”

She is building a serving arsenal and talking about team energy in the same answer. The communication and leadership she named in April show up again here, and she credits the seniors for how the group came together. If she gets a turn at the service line, the variety she describes gives Mira Costa a way to push Sierra Canyon off its first-ball options. Coaches tracking 2029 setters should watch how she carries that team energy forward.

💡 Game You’re Proud Of
My court awareness and reading skills while on defense are things I’m proud of while playing. I also think my communication and leadership on the court are something that shine through me as not just a setter, but a teammate and player.

🧠 What Coaches Should Know
I’ve spent my whole life growing up playing four-man at 16th St in Hermosa. I’ve grown to be so grateful for the volleyball community because of it. I love to cook, which I think opens up a lot of nutrition opportunities for me as a high-level athlete. I like to meal prep and eat good foods while being creative. I also think it’s important for coaches to know that when I’m on the court, I am experienced and proficient in all skills, from blocking and attacking to serve receive and defense to setting and serving, not to mention my energy and leadership.

Tristan Del Riego Tristan Del Riego 5'9" | S/RS Mira Costa | 2029 State CA ‘s transition into setting has accelerated her understanding of tempo and location. In just her second season at the position, she is consistently jump setting with rhythm and working to find her hitters from multiple platforms. The versatility from her previous six-rotation experience shows up in her comfort across zones.

Her technical emphasis is on precision and offensive adaptability. She is not limited to one release point and actively seeks to deliver tempo regardless of pass quality. That adaptability is significant for a developing setter.

She is currently refining her block timing and penetration, focusing on pressing over the net and syncing hands with attacker contact. The training includes private sessions and deliberate in-game focus on timing and momentum into her swing block. The shift toward complete front-row responsibility suggests growth toward positional completeness.

When asked what she wants coaches to understand beyond the stat sheet, she said:

The key phrase is quick to apply information. That signals coachability and processing speed. Her self-description centers on adaptability and responsiveness to instruction.

Off the court, Tristan describes herself as empathetic and entrepreneurial, having built small businesses since childhood. She channels creativity and initiative outside of sport, which often translates into confidence in competitive environments.

Charlie Fuerbringer is a player who has impacted Tristan this season. She points to Charlie’s volleyball IQ and steady confidence at the collegiate level. Tristan’s focus on IQ and composure reflects what she is studying and intentionally modeling in her own development.
