Mayli Hernandez’s tournament came down to one rally on the final day of the AAU Tournament. Score tied at 20, a long back-and-forth exchange, and Mayli calling for the set because she’d decided this was the point she was going to finish. Her setter delivered, and she put it away to help close out for a win. What she took from that moment wasn’t just the kill. It was the trust. She was explicit that the feeling of knowing her team believed in each other mattered as much as the result.

Mayli is candid that her energy is a resource for her teammates, and she treats hyping them up as part of her job, not an accessory to it. Her defense has taken a real step forward this season too, and she credits her improved serve receive and digs with giving her more confidence to play fast. She’s transferring into Taft Charter High School this fall and is looking forward to building something new with that program.

Hernandez’s weekend at SCSN 16U Event #2 reflected vocal leadership and offensive intelligence. She embraced the role of steady encourager, becoming the voice that kept her team’s energy elevated even when matches tightened. Coaches noted her consistency and high IQ, particularly her ability to score out of system, read defensive positioning, and place shots with intention. As she continues to evolve, Hernandez is focused on becoming more available offensively from the back row, applying feedback to communicate louder and present herself as a six-rotation option. Off the court, she is outgoing and relationship-driven, energized by time with friends and family and a love for music.

Mayli is an exciting freshman with a ton of potential. Standing at 6’0″, she used her physical tools to dominate her court on the outside at the Expo. Mayli is patient on her serve receive, ensuring she gives her setters a great platform to deliver accurate sets. Once the ball is in play, she transitions smoothly into outside hitter, showing good form on her approach and hitting the ball squarely. She has room to grow as she works on hitting at the top of her approach, which will give her even more power and control. As she continues to mature and refine her technique, Mayli is poised to make a significant leap in her game this club season.
