2028/2029: Future Leaders, Fierce Competitors

Thank you to our subscribers for supporting behind-the-scenes coverage of both sessions of the 2025 SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp. Your continued support allows us to spotlight athletes who are not only competing for exposure but also pushing themselves to grow as leaders and teammates.   This event brought together more than 30 college programs from across the country, including Saint Mary's, Fairfield University, American University, Cal Poly University, Lipscomb, and SMU. It offered athletes a fast-paced, college-coach-led environment that emphasized communication, adaptability, and precision under pressure.   For the five featured athletes, the camp was more than just a skills test. It was an opportunity to embrace leadership, raise their standard of play, and take responsibility for their impact on the court. From calling rotations and reading setters to setting team culture through discipline and energy, these 2028s and one 2029 are approaching the game with maturity and purpose. Here's what they had to say about the experience and the goals they've set to level up for the seasons ahead.    [player_tooltip player_id='474505' first='Raneighla' last='Gonzalez'], a 2028 middle and opposite, left the SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp with a sharper sense of discipline at the net. One of her biggest takeaways was the importance of holding steady hand positioning while blocking to avoid wasted movement and maximize reaction time. She embraced the challenge of facing elite-level coaches and players, including a standout moment where she volunteered to run a pop float route and scored by cutting the ball past the LMU coach attempting to block her.   Looking ahead, Raneighla is focused on leveling up her offensive game. Her goal is to run advanced, high-level Team USA–style routes with her setters, pushing herself to compete with precision, pace, and adaptability. With her fearless attitude and drive to improve, she continues to evolve as both a dynamic attacker and a reliable presence at the net. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Setter [player_tooltip player_id='507916' first='Addisyn' last='Gardenhire'] came into the SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp with a clear mindset, communicate with confidence and compete with energy. Playing with unfamiliar hitters challenged her to be vocal and intentional in every rep. “I focused on using my voice as much as possible, especially while setting, to build quick connections and establish trust with my hitters,” she shared. Her locked-in approach helped her lead the tempo on the court while quickly earning the respect of new teammates.   What stood out most to Addisyn was the energy and involvement of the college coaches throughout the showcase. “I loved how hyped some of the coaches got when we did something well, it made the showcase so fun and made me want to play even harder,” she said. The experience helped her realize she's looking for a college program where that same energy, communication, and family feel exist every day. With her ability to lead in real time and bring out the best in those around her, Addisyn continues to grow as a vocal, high-IQ presence at the setter position. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='714028' first='Yemaya' last='Chappell'], a middle blocker, walked away from the SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp with a deeper understanding of the importance of connection, not just on the court, but off it too. “I learned that it is not just how you play but how you interact with the coaches and the players, because they are humans too, and everyone loves a good engaging conversation,” she said. That mindset helped her stay open to feedback and build strong rapport throughout the event.   One of Yemaya's proudest moments came during the very first drill, when middles were asked to set out-of-system. She received direct feedback from UCLA's Coach Amir Ludo-Rodriguez and was able to immediately apply his technique corrections to her performance. Looking ahead, her goal is to sharpen her court awareness by reading opposing setters and anticipating their choices. She's focused on improving her blocking instincts and finding more opportunities to disrupt plays at the net. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='568108' first='Jadyn' last='Foran'], a 2028 middle blocker, took full advantage of the learning environment at the SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp by leaning into the experience and staying curious. “The biggest thing I learned from being on the court with so many incredible coaches was to ask as many questions as possible,” she said. “These coaches are here to help you grow as players and people and have great feedback to improve your skills within the game.” That mindset paid off, especially during six-on-six play where she applied new techniques in real time.   Jadyn's proudest moment came when she successfully read the setter and delivered several quality blocks, helping her team score. Her success was a direct result of the focused blocking and eye-work drills practiced earlier in the camp. Heading into her upcoming season, Jadyn has set the bar high. She plans to raise her level of play with every event and continue developing as a positive leader by bringing energy, clear communication, and smart decision-making to every rep. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     [player_tooltip player_id='496933' first='Sade' last='Devine'], a libero, left the SCVC and Mizuno Long Beach College Camp with a sharper understanding of how to lead out of system and support her teammates through smart decision-making. One lesson that stuck with her came during a drill where a coach reminded players that a high, inside set, regardless of perfection, can still give the hitter a chance. “When I went to practice the next day, I started setting my outsides more inside, and they were able to hit from my set. They had struggled to do so before,” she shared. Whether it was helping her hitters get more swings or saving a shanked ball 30 feet away during a scrimmage, Sade took pride in her ability to adjust, follow through, and keep her team supported.   One of her most memorable moments came during a competitive serve receive game in the libero group, where teams could only earn points off perfect or near-perfect passes. Her team finished with 22 points while others had only five or seven. “All the girls were so amazing and supportive, so definitely shoutout to my lucky group 3!” she shared. Looking ahead, Sade is focused on building her volleyball IQ and becoming a leader who can direct and support her team in all phases of the game. “Defense is a mindset and what wins games.
