Minnesota Hidden Gems Revealed

As scouts, we are constantly on the lookout for rising, high level talent, especially with new, young players that have already impressed on the varsity courts in the fall. The following are some 8th and 9th graders that earned significant playing time on the varsity courts and have just begun high school or have yet to even start it all together. Anyway, watch out for these players as they are already making an impact and will likely be breaking many records by the time they are seniors. Porttiin is a freshman setter that has already surpassed 1,000 high school career assists, clearing demonstrating her exposure and success at high level volleyball. Porttiin has exemplary skills and court awareness, both well beyond her years. Her sets are consistently clean and precise, giving her hitters the ideal ball to score. She reads the opposition well and makes smart decisions. Her poise, consistency, and game IQ make her an up and coming standout setter with tremendous potential.     Johnson, only an 8th grader at Greenway, is a 5'9" six rotation outside hitter that lit up the varsity courts this past high school season and played at a skill level way beyond her age. She impressed with 306 kills, a .217 hitting percentage, added 50 aces, and showcased that she is also a defensive standout at 287 digs and 37 blocks. Her combination of athleticism, court IQ, and exposure to high level volleyball makes her an exciting young prospect with super high capacity.     When I stumbled upon Meyer earlier in the prep season, I was instantly impressed. Meyer is a powerful attacker. I know she is listed as a middle on the roster, but she can also terminate from the pins and is super dynamic no matter where she is hitting on the court. What makes Meyer also special is that she can adjust midstride to any set, has impeccable timing, has a solid vertical, and has a mixed bag of shots including tips and off speed. Essentially, she is athletic, skilled, versatile, and basically just a stud that we can't wait to see grow her game and compete up two age levels this club season with MVA.     Taylor is a freshman that earned the starting spot on varsity as the libero. She is consistent at keeping her hips behind the ball, allowing her to stay balanced and deliver controlled passes to target. She's quick, reads the ball well, and never hesitates often making impressive one handed saves and tough digs look easy. Taylor is taking her talents to [program_tooltip program_id='449558' first='AVB' last='Fire'] this club season and we can't wait to see her rule the back court.     Woodman is a new middle that has already shown impressive composure and skills as only an 8th grader on the varsity court. Throughout the season, she maintained strong spacing, avoided overrunning the ball, and made impressive attacks from out of the middle and the right pin. Her transitions were efficient as she was able to stay out of the setters path and made herself available as an attacking option. Woodman is one those middles to watch as she clearly as the capacity to dominate the position.
