Rising Freshmen: Who Stood Out at the Sunshine Classic

The AZ Freshmen really showed out at the Sunshine Classic. The youngest high school competitors, yet some of the most fierce competition of the entire tournament. We saw some all out battles in all of the divisions and it really kept us on the edge of our seats. These young athletes showed poise, confidence, and a level of play that turned plenty of heads throughout the weekend. We saw some really impressive finishes as well.   The future is bright for the Class of 2029, and these players made sure their names were on everyone's radar at the Sunshine Classic. Here's a look at some of the rising freshmen who stood out:    Dylan proved to be a true difference-maker in the middle this weekend. She's dynamic, explosive, and thrives in pressure moments, consistently stepping up when her team needs a big play. Offensively, she showed impressive versatility — attacking the 3-ball with aggression, running confident slides, and staying dangerous on quick tempos in the middle. Her ability to stay available in transition and attack with authority made her a constant challenge for opposing blockers.   Beyond her offense, Dylan's impact extended to the little things that help teams win. She was intentional about covering her hitters, staying engaged in every rally, and bringing great energy as she celebrated her teammates' success. At the net, her block was equally effective. She moved well laterally, closed seams with quick footwork, and pressed over the net with strong hands — exactly the kind of presence coaches want from their middle blocker.   Her all-around play and competitive mindset played a big role in helping her team finish in the top half of the tournament.     Sophia is a true floor leader who continues to impress every time she steps onto the court. She has a natural ability to lead under pressure, staying composed while making smart decisions that keep her team in control of the match. As a setter, she consistently delivered quality opportunities for her hitters, running a smooth and well-balanced offense that kept opposing defenses guessing.   This weekend, she also showcased her offensive side more than usual, adding another layer to her game with timely attacks that made a real impact for her team. From the service line, she came through in key moments as well, applying pressure and helping her team maintain momentum throughout the tournament.   What stands out most about Sophia is how she influences the game in multiple areas — setting, serving, attacking, and leading. Her presence on the floor elevates the entire team, and it's clear she has the tools and mindset to continue developing into a high-level player. She's undoubtedly a name that will be highly sought after in the coming years, and we're excited to watch her journey unfold.     Morgan did an outstanding job running the floor for her squad this weekend. She commanded the offense with confidence, communicated clearly, and brought energy when her team needed it most. Her leadership showed not just in her words, but in her poise and presence during key moments.   Defensively, she was locked in. She worked hard to keep her team clean out of system, played disciplined back-row defense, and was intentional about covering her hitters. Those “little things” — the extra step, the early read, the constant communication — are what separate good setters from tremendous ones.   Her ball delivery was consistent and precise, giving her hitters quality opportunities to score. Morgan understands tempo, knows her go-to options at all times, and makes smart decisions under pressure. She impacts the game far beyond assists — she controls rhythm, momentum, and confidence for her entire team.     Sloan embodies everything you want in an impactful outside hitter. This weekend, she reminded everyone why she's considered one of the top players in her class. In serve receive, she was sharp and consistent, delivering accurate first contacts that kept her team in rhythm. Her transition game was equally impressive — she worked hard off the net and stayed available, making herself a scoring option no matter how chaotic the rally became.   Defensively, Sloan refused to let up. Even in the tightest rallies, she stayed disciplined, read the play early, and made the right move. Offensively, she showed how complete her game really is. Her arm is powerful, but what separates her is her decision-making — knowing when to unload and when to use a smart, calculated shot to score.   Add in her passion and constant communication, and you have a true difference-maker on the floor. Sloan doesn't just contribute — she elevates the entire team around her.     Chelsea was sharp and intentional all weekend long. Defensively, she was clean, accurate, and aggressive — controlling tough contacts and putting herself in position to make high-level plays. Her ball placement stood out, consistently delivering hittable opportunities and keeping her team in rhythm.   What really separates her is her mindset — she never lets an off-pass become an excuse. Instead, she adjusts, competes, and finds a way to make the play. She's a calm and steady presence for her team, while still leading on the floor.   Her connection with her middles is strong and intentional, and she does a great job distributing to the pins with purpose and precision. Chelsea doesn't just run an offense — she elevates it.     Laela was a reliable, go-to terminator for her team all weekend long. When they needed a point, she was the one they trusted — and she delivered. Her down-the-line swing was especially impressive, attacking with speed and power while recognizing exactly when that seam was open.   She was explosive in her approach and disciplined in her transition, working hard to get off the net and stay available in every rally. That consistency made her a constant offensive option and a challenge for opposing blockers.   Defensively, she was just as intentional. She played smart off-blocker defense, reading the play well and keeping rallies alive with controlled touches. Laela impacted the match on both sides of the ball, bringing a balanced, competitive presence that helped her team stay in control. It's easy to forget she's only a freshman, especially as she competes up and stands out among the Class of 2028. Addison leads with her voice and her actions — constantly communicating, organizing, and staying one step ahead of the play. She understands tempo, reads the defense well, and consistently puts her hitters in positions to succeed.   What stands out most is the trust her team places in her. In big moments, they look to Addison to steady the floor and guide the offense. It's clear they believe in her leadership and decision-making — and she embraces that responsibility. A true floor general with a bright future ahead.     Estella was an explosive presence on the pin all weekend long. She plays with a fiery passion that's impossible to ignore — you can truly see how much the game means to her in every rally.   Her transition work was disciplined and intentional, getting off the net quickly and making herself available whether her team was in system or scrambling on an emergency ball. That consistency made her a reliable offensive option no matter the situation.   Beyond her physical impact, Estella brought energy and life to the court. She communicated effectively, stayed engaged, and provided a spark that fueled her team's momentum. Her combination of intensity, work rate, and presence makes her a powerful difference-maker on the outside.     Lola showcased outstanding consistency all weekend long. She was a true defensive anchor for her team, bringing stability and confidence to the back row. Time and time again, she delivered controlled serve receive and dependable defensive touches that kept her team in system and composed.   From the service line, she applied pressure and competed with purpose. Her grit and heart were evident in every rally — she moved well, covered ground efficiently, and read hitters at a high level, often positioning herself before the ball even crossed the net.   What makes Lola so valuable is her reliability on both sides of the libero role. In serve receive and in live-ball defense, her team could count on her. Steady, tough, and competitive — the kind of presence every team needs in the back row.     Sarah is a true competitor, and it shows the moment she steps on the court. Her passion for the game is evident in every rally — she plays with urgency, intensity, and a genuine desire to win.   On the right-side pin, she was a major offensive presence, scoring with confidence and putting pressure on opposing defenses. But her impact didn't stop there. When called upon to set, she ran an effective, composed offense, making smart decisions and delivering quality balls to her hitters. That versatility makes her especially valuable.   Sarah contributes across multiple areas of the game — offense, leadership, momentum, and composure. Her all-around performance was a huge factor in her team finishing in the top two of Open. A difference-maker who competes with heart and purpose every time.     [player_tooltip player_id='891527' first='Tatum' last='Cutchen'] was absolutely lethal on the outside for her team this weekend. She consistently made high-level decisions that put her squad in strong scoring positions throughout the tournament. Every swing felt intentional — strong, controlled, and composed — exactly what coaches want from their outside hitter.   She handled out-of-system situations with maturity, making smart choices when plays broke down and still finding ways to terminate. Whether the set was perfect or off the net, Tatum found a way to score on the opportunities in front of her.   More than just a scorer, she serves as an anchor for her team — steady, reliable, and impactful in big moments. Her ceiling is high, and we're excited to watch her continue to elevate her game and climb even further.     Caylee absolutely went to work this weekend as a true 6-rotation outside. Competing up against a group of sophomores, she didn't just hold her own — she stood out. That alone speaks volumes about her composure and competitive edge.   In the back row, she was rock solid, especially in serve receive. She delivered controlled, consistent first contacts and was a true playmaker defensively, extending rallies and stabilizing her team in key moments. Her ability to “hold it down” in the back court gave her team confidence to stay aggressive.   Front row, she was a terminator. When her team needed a point, they leaned on her — and she delivered. She attacked with authority, made smart decisions, and played with the kind of confidence you want in your go-to option.   Caylee impacts the game in every rotation, and if this weekend was any indication, there's a whole lot more ahead for her. Her competitiveness and refusal to give up on a ball were evident all weekend long. That kind of control and adaptability keeps an offense flowing and puts constant pressure on the opposing defense. She's a true playmaker who understands how to manage the game, not just run it.   Her communication was strong and purposeful, helping keep her team organized and confident on the floor. Defensively, she contributed key touches that allowed her squad to remain in system and stay aggressive.
