Class of 2027: Setters Worth the Watch

So much goes into being a setter, and what I watch for is how they handle everything from adversity, how they adjust when the point doesn't go their way, and how well they distribute the ball to their hitters. I believe to be a strong setter, you need to be confident in yourself and have a strong understanding of the game. Adriana does a great job balancing her attackers and gets her middles going early in the game, thanks to her strong IQ; this leaves her pins open for a one-on-one. She reads the game so well and adjusts when passes are off. Izzy has a natural feel at the net; no matter where she is on the court, she never forces her sets. Izzy is very efficient and has all the mechanics of a setter down. When the defense is focused on one hitter, Izzy knows to switch it up to keep the defense off balance. She isn't worried about the assist number; she is focused on setting up her hitters. She does a fantastic job in running the offense. Finley reads the blockers really well and uses that to her advantage. If there is a mismatch, she will find it. She is very confident and creates rhythm for her hitters. Emma's biggest key is how well she communicates with her hitters and how much they trust her. She makes out-of-system plays look easy and delivers quality sets under pressure. She understands the importance of the game's location and tempo. She is confident and competitive as a setter, and that is what every coach wants. She excels at reading the court, finding weaknesses in the defense, and exploiting them to her advantage. Claire is very disciplined in her footwork and in utilizing all of her hitters. She understands that the little details matter, from communication and leadership to keeping teammates engaged after difficult stretches.
