Every time I caught a glimpse of the Class of 2028, these defenders were doing their thing, making the game without drawing attention. One rally is a tough serve-receive pass that keeps the offense in sync. Next up is a dig that seems impossible to keep alive or the confidence to take away a hitter's preferred pitch. Those are the games that hang around long after a tournament's over. That's why these players have earned a place on this watch list. They compete, they make the players around them better, and they continue to show the kind of back-row game that college coaches love.

Sophia Deng has a soothing presence in the back row. Another play that stuck with me was seeing her take a powerful cross-court swing, keep her platform quiet, and put a perfect pass that immediately turned into a kill on the next contact. Those are the rallies that swing momentum. She's always providing her team with quality first contact, and that's one reason she's becoming a defender college coaches need to know. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Brooke Williams has an aggressive mindset, and it shows when the ball is in the air. In one long rally, she ran down a tip that looked dead, got back to her base, and then produced another dig on the very next swing. Those extra efforts keep points going and give her team a chance to score. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Dani Hubert makes the most difficult serve-receive rotations look routine. She kept making passes that were exactly on target against one of the better serving teams I saw this summer, giving her setter every opportunity. College coaches know how important that consistency is, even if it doesn't always wow the crowd. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='549643' first='Hayden' last='Bauer'] makes her mark and waits. There was one sequence where she read an outside hitter's shoulder early, slid into the seam before the swing, and turned what looked like a clean kill into a controlled dig. Those reads are not a coincidence. It's about understanding the game before the ball goes over the net. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Sophia O'Neil has a knack for being where the ball is headed. One rally that stuck with me started with her handling a tough serve receive, and then she immediately dug the next hard-driven attack and kept the point going. Those consecutive plays don't happen unless a player is reading the game well and staying ready for each contact. She's steady in the back row, and the more I watched her, the more I realized why college coaches should actively consider recruiting her. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Under pressure, [player_tooltip player_id='809431' first='Ruby' last='Hawley'] never seems to change the way she plays. In a tight set late, she handled a tough serve, made a clean first contact, and seconds later came up with a dig on a hard-driven attack to keep the rally alive. Those back-to-back touches are exactly what the coaches are looking for because they show trust, consistency, and the composure to stay in there when the match is on the line. You don't take guys who can make plays in those moments out of the game. ~Theresa @prepdigdakotas

[player_tooltip player_id='744541' first='Autumn' last='Kilber'] is the type of defender who won't allow an opponent to score without having to earn it. I recall one rally where she went way out of the court for a ball, kept it in, scrambled back into the defense, and was ready for the next swing a few seconds later. That sequence was the way she competed. She gets on the floor, and she stays involved, and she gives her team another chance, and that's what you want from somebody running the back row. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

Thank you to all my readers for making this journey possible.
