Jesse Etter | Prep Dig Scout
Phipps and her Sudden Impact 18 Tsunami squad will play a heavy schedule this season, including Philadelphia, Salt Lake, and Atlanta tournaments. Phipps is a smooth defender who can run down balls out of the left back and gives her team good, high digs when she takes the first contact. She has outstanding footwork and excellent neutral posture when she sets. Phipps has a great connection with her pin attackers early on; she runs a fast offense that keeps defenses on their heels.

Phipps has quick feet, whether she is running down the second ball or running down a tip deflection that looks like it’s headed to the floor. She showed an excellent connection with her SIVBC attackers this season, taking advantage of the tall and dynamic lineup of hitters with a fast tempo and varied attack. The rising senior from Eastlake has good size at 5’9″ and works hard from the service line and on defense.

Phipps had a great way of leaving her middles at the perfect distance off the net with her assets, allowing the attacker enough room to maneuver around the block. That sense of location held up in the same fashion when she set the pipe, Phipps led the hitters through the 10-foot line, giving them the ability to keep the ball in front and accelerate through the swing. Like a great quarterback leading receivers out of a route, her setting allowed attackers to move to the ball, minimizing having to bend back and play the ball behind them. The Eastlake junior showed good overall size and movement, playing defense first and handling swings out of her right-back spot.
