The senior libero was as efficient as usual on the backcourt, helping create the conditions for Tompkins’ game to flow. Merrell was impressive in serve-receive, at times covering more than half of the court, and led the team in passes with 27 of their total of 53, and just three errors. The libero was also very good when she had to set in transition, hand setting from the back with great precision to both pins. Merrell led the Falcons in digs, with 13, and aces, with three, besides having had good runs at the service line on multiple occasions.

Merrell was a bright spot in what was a tough night for the Falcons, who could only at times challenge Cinco Ranch. The senior libero did a lot of hard work in serve-receive, handling basically half of the court herself, and was very accurate when opponents tested her, getting 17 passes. Merrell also took charge of the team’s second ball a few times because of their passing struggles and did a good job with her out-of-system setting. The libero, who led the team with 16 digs, also had a nice serving run in the third set, almost bringing the Falcons back to the match.

Merrell is one of Tompkins’ most important players from the libero position. Because her team has several tall players, who are extremely strong offensively, her ability to cover ground and deliver accurate passes to keep the team in system is invaluable for them. Extremely technical, the libero is also very active defensively and generates several transition opportunities. Merrell, who also sets and serves at a very high level, has grown into a huge leadership role with Tompkins, which will be even more important in her senior season.

Tompkins’ libero and captain was pivotal to their victory with her consistent and reliable game. In a match full of ups and downs from both sides, Merrell was arguably the most steady player on the court and her consistency created the conditions for the Falcons to come back and win the match after trailing 2-1. She covered basically half the court in serve-receive and was incredibly efficient, making very few mistakes and delivering excellent passes during the entire match. Merrell made some impressive digs from the left back position and also served well throughout the match, especially on set one, when she had back-to-back aces. She also had a very positive leadership role with her teammates, keeping them calm under pressure.

Although she was playing one age group up with HJV 16 Elite, Merrell was among the most impressive setters on the day, leading her team to three victories with just one set dropped. She split the setting duties with Payton Stroud and did an excellent job when she was on the court. Always very calm, she thrived by her decision-making and consistency. Merrell was brilliant when in system, moving her hitters around very well and making very good calls in terms of who to set. When the pass was off the net, she helped her hitters with well-placed sets. Merrell also made a good impact on the backcourt, playing excellent defense and having some good serving runs.

A State Tournament runner-up with her high school Tompkins, Merrell has emerged as one of the most promising liberos in the entire state and that feeling only grew stronger with her performance at the Top 250 Expo. Also capable of playing as a setter, she’s extremely technical and has only gotten better with her positioning. I’ve watch her repeatedly pass dimes during one of the drills and also make good plays on defense.
