Expert Analysis
Kyp Harasymowycz | Prep Dig Scout
The tallest of the setters listed here today, Claire is from western Indiana at a smaller-than-average school that doesn’t stand out as a volleyball haven. No worries, however, as she’s running the offense for Boiler Juniors’ 17-1 squad and the open level at which they play. With high hands, consistent location and an innate ability to find the right hitter in the right situation, Claire’s already doing upper-level setting and is merely fine-tuning her craft to adjust to better competition.

Solid, consistent and unassuming, Claire’s the setter that gets the job done without the fanfare or flash that a lot of setters these days seem to prefer. The training and the muscle memory are both there—-she’s more than capable of running an offense on her own, and a fast one at that. Leading her high school team to their best record in YEARS, she’s a coach’s captain, and leads by example. No nonsense, no attitude, and no plays taken off are the three aspects to her character that mark her excellence, and she’s still a junior.

Every once in a while, Crawfordsville produces open-level talent. Recently, one of their grads moved on to play at D2 Indianapolis, yet I see Claire as reaching higher, possibly small-to-mid-major D1. Her length, size and set placement graduate well to the collegiate game, and the training she’s received at the club level has really upped her game in the last year or so. Again, Miss Peacock is also an unassuming setter who leads by example and consistency—-exact traits that are highly marketable at most schools.

One of the more fun setters to watch in this age group, Claire is easily the best setter I’ve seen come out of western Indiana in recent memory. Her ability to turn a nothing pass into a terminable ball is just a regular action for her in the flow of the match. She also does a lot of the little things well—her serves are calculated and accurate, she defends her position well and has the size and volleyball IQ to set a well-constructed block. No, she won’t be one of the first setters off of the board once offers start rolling in. But whomever gets her will get a pleasant surprise that will only improve with time and training, and she’s already VERY good.

From a non-traditional volleyball school west of Indianapolis, Claire is an exceptional add to this squad at Boiler Juniors. What drives her is her impeccable footwork. She’s always at the ball, wherever it is passed, ready to set. Even if she chooses to be offensive (which she has the size to do so), it’s quite deceptive, and WILL score points if you don’t respect it as a defender. Able to block her position better than most in this class, her long arms make hitting against her that much harder. She’s the whole package, and is getting better with great training at Boiler Juniors.

Speaking of a top-flight player being stuck at a high school not known for high level volleyball, Miss Peacock is an above-average setter with size and length that can make the setting position look simple. Her smooth demeanor, coupled with that athleticism of hers, will be on display for Boiler Juniors 16 Gold (16-1). How Claire presents herself in the heat of battle is a character trait of hers—when things get heated, you’ll find her in control, keeping her team together and driving the proverbial bus at the setting position.

Claire moved the ball around quickly, efficiently, and cleanly. She could consistently dish out great sets at a fast tempo. Her speed and clean hands were a huge asset in transition, and she utilized every hitter she had.
