About Ella

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I'm a dynamic and intelligent athlete who can not only contribute offensively but I'm a weapon on defense and at the service line. I'm extremely quick on the court and like to run a fast tempo offense. I have great court vision and can consistently deliver the ball from anywhere on the floor to setup my hitters for a kill.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I am very outgoing and love spending time with my teammates, on and off the court. In the gym and on the court, I am completely dedicated to being the best that I can be. I am extremely coachable, and work hard to improve each day. I have been taught to practice with intent, and understand that I'm counted on to make my teammates better.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

Currently, all my time is dedicated to school and volleyball, year round. My dedication to the sport allowed me to excel as a Freshman, starting at setter for Lake Zurich, running a 5-1 offense. It allowed me to rank #2 in assists per set in NSC, only behind an All American. I was also ranked #2 in Illinois in assists per set, class of 2027. I am proud to be named a 2023 AVCA Phenom as well.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I started on Varsity as a Freshman at Lake Zurich. I was lucky enough to be led by strong seniors, including my sister, Madelyn Elsen, who will be playing at Michigan Tech University. They taught me what it means to lead, and I'm looking forward to being that type of leader this Fall as a Sophomore. I am a great teammate, who always encourages others and have their backs, always.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

Significant? No. I do always need to overcome the initial perception of people because of my height. Volleyball is seen as a sport for tall athletes, and I don't fit that image. I make up for it with my skills, my work ethic, my intelligence on the court, and my leadership. I overcome by working hard on and off the court, and have a vertical of 26.5 that I'm very proud of.

What type of college are you looking for?

I want to be a part of a winning program that has a great culture that I can continue to contribute to.

She impressed me in all of those little moments during games where plays could go wrong, but Ella helped turn them into productive points for her team.
