Lydia initially caught my eye with her high-level and competitive serving. She held her serve on the back line for numerous points in a row and consistently put other teams out of system. Lydia’s sets were also impressive. She ran a clean offense at the sizzle and utilized all of her hitters. Lydia was also not afraid to feed her hot hitters.

I can’t close out this tournament without mentioning Baughman. Battling their way to the championship, Baughman is the glue for this well functioning Blaze team. She does a great job reading the floor, getting all of her attackers involved, and feeding them the sets that they need to be successful. She also mixes up the offense well so defenders can’t cheat and camp out on one attacker. Baughman is also a great defender. She made countless digs and saves on the weekend. All around, A+ job in not only setting, but defense, effort, and grit.

Baughman was probably one of my favorite setters at the tournament. I intentionally saved her for my “gem” column as I think she is an up and coming setter with a long volleyball career ahead of her. She is quick, sets a clean ball, finds her middles, and can push it out to her pins. What sets her apart from many of the other setters I saw this weekend is that she also plays good right back defense and provides exceptional block coverage for her attackers. She is a well rounded setter that has a lot of potential.
