About Maya
How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?
As a player, I like to be calm and confident. I trust myself and my abilities. My gameplay style aims to be simple while making a controlled contact. Being quick on defense while also being able to read the game is something I do well. I also never give up on any ball and go all out for every point. I strive to be a leader on the court communicating effectively with both the back and front row.
Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?
I focus on a how I can better the ball mentality. I work hard at practice so that I’m able to perform consistently in games for my team. Practice gives me trust in myself since I know I’m capable. I am quick to make corrections and move on. I’m coachable as well. I am also an extremely outgoing person and like to focus on supporting my teammates!
What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?
I consider myself a leader on my team this year. As a Libero who is the only one in jersey, often playing all six rotations, I’m expected to play a consistent game. I always have a great mindset and handle pressure well. I also love supporting my teammates, even helping them when I can.
Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.
Part of my 15U/16U year was spent in a mental battle with my confidence. It was ruining my consistency and I had trouble moving on from mistakes. I put a lot of my self worth into volleyball. It took lots of work and finding the right mindset but I eventually found my confidence again. I was able to play consistently and move on quickly. Now, I rarely overthink and I’m having more fun than ever!
What type of college are you looking for?
I’d be grateful for any opportunity as the thing most important to me is the game of volleyball and being able to play the sport I love. This means I don’t mind too much where I go and I’m exploring all of my options. I trust God will guide me in finding the program that is right for me.
