About Melaina

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

I am a competitive and energetic setter who leads through communication and consistency. I help my team make adjustments throughout matches, use our strengths to overcome weaknesses, and look for opportunities to expose our opponents weaknesses while putting my hitters in the best position to succeed.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I am hardworking, coachable, and team-oriented. I try to understand my teammates mindsets when they are struggling and find ways to help them succeed. I strongly believe in the "next play" mentality and always look for momentum we can carry into the next point.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I have been selected as a captain multiple times with AVB Fire and received the Fire Award, the club's highest honor. I was also brought up to varsity as a freshman, played varsity as a sophomore, earned an academic award, and was recognized for a safe driving PSA. I am also involved in my church and youth group. I also enjoy helping at youth volleyball camps and teaching younger players the game.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

Being a three sport athlete has unlocked many quality's. Volleyball basketball and softball has shaped who I am today and helped me develop leadership, communication, teamwork, accountability, and resilience. As a setter and captain, l have learned how to lead under pressure, support my teammates, and put the team's success first. I will also serve as a high school captain as a junior.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

One challenge I have faced is working through player slumps and performance struggles. These experiences taught me mental toughness, confidence, and perseverance. I learned to trust my training, focus on the next play, stay positive, and continue helping my team succeed.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking tor a college that will challenge me academically and athletically while helping me grow as a person. I believe there is always room for improvement, and no athlete is ever finished growing. I want coaches who will continue to push me, help me develop my weaknesses, and see my potential rather than settling for "good enough."
