is learning something many hitters do not figure out until much later, smart points count the same. The 2029 Fresno Heat pin talked about using roll shots, tips, and vision to beat organized blocks, especially when plays break down. Her example of seeing a loaded block and dropping a deep roll shot to zone four tells you she is not just reacting, she is reading, processing, and solving. That kind of problem-solving keeps defenses honest.
What made her responses stand out even more was her mental growth. Ortiz openly talked about moving away from frustration and into positive affirmations, point-to-point focus, and tuning out outside noise. She is applying coaching, staying grounded academically, and looking for a program that challenges both athlete and student. There is toughness here, but it is controlled toughness, and that matters.

is developing a strong defensive awareness, particularly in how she reads attackers and positions herself accordingly. By focusing on the hitter’s arm and hand, she is able to anticipate direction and put herself in position to make controlled defensive plays.
Her communication reflects an understanding of what her team needs in high-level competition. She emphasized the importance of coverage against bigger blocks, helping her team stay engaged and prepared throughout matches.
She is currently expanding her role on the right side, continuing to refine her approach and contact while contributing at the net with her blocking. That versatility is adding to her overall impact on the court.

Sophie’s weekend highlighted her emotional leadership and resilience in difficult situations. After a tough first set in her team’s opening match, she helped shift momentum by encouraging her teammates, recording a block on a big middle and earning three kills in the second set. Even after rolling her ankle later in the match, she reflected positively on her team’s ability to adjust and stay composed. Her next focus is improving serve receive, specifically angling her platform more effectively to make her setter’s job easier, while also being more intentional about expressing gratitude toward her family and coaches. Off the court, Sophie is a dedicated Pokémon collector and recently pulled a Gengar VMAX card, one of her top chase cards.
Sophie will compete next at the Las Vegas Classic from February 14–16.
