Whispers about some super freak athlete down in Superior with unlimited volleyball potential started about 18 months ago. They grew louder and louder with every passing month and it the crescendo has not stopped.
Meyer gave her commitment to play volleyball at Nebraska earlier this week despite having the option to play Division I basketball or compete at the Division I level in track & field.
“I’ve always imagined myself being a Husker,” Meyer said.
As to why she chose volleyball over the other sports she’s a standout in, it was a pretty simple explanation.
“I feel like I can succeed more (in volleyball),” she said.
The scary thing when you watch Meyer play is imaging what she will become over the next few years. She has the big frame with long arms and will only get stronger and stronger. She has surprisingly soft hands on the court and her defense is pretty good for Class C-2. But, you can tell she hasn’t had any major club volleyball experience to help refine her game and develop a more powerful and consistent approach and swing.
That will change this winter as Meyer has said she will either be playing for Nebraska Juniors or VCNebraska – both Lincoln-based clubs with strong ties to the Huskers.
Last year, as a freshman at Superior, Meyer finished with 272 kills (3.1 per set) while hitting .354 with 60 blocks. This year, Meyer has helped lead her team to a 22-3 mark and has 382 kills (5.8 per set) while hitting .324 with 47 ½ blocks with at least three more matches left to play.
