Elk River wont’s start from scratch during the volleyball restart following the MSHSL’s Sept. 21 announcement to play in the fall instead of waiting until spring.
The Elks return six starters from last fall’s Class 3A state tournament squad.
“Our team looks fabulous,” Elks coach Theresa Brummer said. “We have six returning starters, and it is obvious they have done their offseason homework. This group all has potential to play at the next level.”
That group includes junior setter/right side hitter Elle Cotton Elle Cotton 6'0" | S Elk River | 2022 State MN , who had a big sophomore season with 189 kills and 139 digs. She plays club volleyball for Select.
Elk River’s starting six also includes senior outside hitters Jordan Hund and Grace Koski, who both had more 140 digs las fall. Senior middle back Jo Langbehn posted 183 kills and 86 kills and has a verbal commitment to play women’s college basketball at Division I-bound St. Thomas.
Sophomore libero Alexa Melcher had a strong freshman season with 258 digs. Senior setter/ right side hitter Emma Olson, who also plays for Crossfire in club volleyball, posted 67 kills and 44 digs in 2019.
Brummer said her players did well in summer and fall practices. She added that she has seen a renewed spirit among her players of late.
Elk River will have its hands full in Northwest Suburban Conference play with conference and section rivals Andover and Blaine. Centennial, Champlin Park and Osseo also have strong teams again.
“We are going to aim high,” said Brummer, who hopes her team can defend its Class 3A, Section 7 title.
Forest Lake and Grand Rapids will challenge the Elks for the section crown in addition to Andover and Blaine. The Elks open regular season play against Centennial 7 p.m. Oct. 8.
