The idea is to do things a little bit differently this year, so after every match I attend, I’ll be posting a quick article highlighting the players that stood out the most in that particular encounter.
This week started with an exciting matchup between two teams that made it to the State Championship last season, Bridgeland and Ridge Point. The match played on Tuesday, August 16, saw the Bears make great use of their homecourt advantage to sweep (25-21, 25-17, 26-24) and secure their ninth victory in the season.
Top Performers
It’s somewhat funny that in a match with so many players with tremendous offensive potential, it was the one who couldn’t hit who made the most impact. The 5’5″ Volpe played out of her mind and was a major factor in Bridgeland’s victory. The star libero had 26 digs, her highest mark in the season so far, and many of those were in hard-driven hits that she easily controlled and sent towards her setter. Volpe made an absolutely jaw-dropping pancake save in a key moment in the first set and was flawless with her passing too.
Playing on the right, the long and powerful Bridgeland hitter was the team’s most reliable and consistent scorer. She had nine kills, but most importantly came up big on offense when the team most needed her, in key moments of the match. She also had an excellent blocking performance, getting three stops and making life harder for Ridge Point outside hittters.
The sophomore middle blocker had a tough battle with Ridge Point’s great middles but it’s fair to say she won far more than she lost during the match. Pfefferkorn used her length extremely well to make an impact at the net and led the team in blocks with four. She was also a force on offense, tallying eight kills and scoring consistently throughout the match, especially in big moments.
Highlights
The explosive outside hitter came off the bench and added great firepower to the team’s offense. Rogers was used as an outside hitter and as a right sider and she thrived in both roles, hitting the ball hard regardless of the situation. Some of her bounces seem to have reenergized her team in difficult moments and she helped with her passing.
On a night in which most of Ridge Point’s star players had their ups and downs, Battle’s consistency was even more important and visible. She remained stable during the entire match, made some great digs, helped stabilize the team’s serve-receiving and made very few mistakes on offense. Battle played as many as four different positions during the match, including setter, and did well in each of them.
