Here at PrepDig, we are committed to covering and promoting as many prospects as possible, from the most popular names to the hidden gems that typically abound at the Lone Star State and during the high school season we’re also doing it by featuring the teams they play at.
Every time we’re at the gym, we’re giving a good look at the teams on the court and we’ll try to feature as many as possible here in this space. Today, we’ll highlight the Clear Springs Chargers.
The Squad
The Chargers entered the season with some important players to replace as last year’s starting outside hitters Grace King and Arion Keeton, middle blocker Kaitlyn Johnson and libero Tali Lew all graduated. The strength of this season’s team lies on the right side of the court, where right siders Ashley Richardson Ashley Richardson 5'11" | S Clear Springs | 2024 State TX and Carissa Young and setter Morgen Durgens Morgen Durgens 5'9" | S Clear Springs | 2024 State TX run the show.
Key Players
An extremely versatile and physical prospect, Richardson can do it all on a volleyball court. Her all-around game is an asset for Clear Springs and the team has her setting when at the back and hitting when at the net and she thrives in both roles. Richardson runs a fast-paced offense but is not the kind of setter that overloads her main hitter, sharing the ball among all of them instead. At 5’11”, she’s a force when asked to hit as she combines excellent athleticism and technique when putting the ball down.
Because of the excess of talent on the right side of the team, Durgens only plays the backcourt rotations but she manages to make a great impact even while only being on the court for half of the time. She has good size at 5’9” and a great touch on the ball that’s capable of turning out-of-system passes into very accurate sets to her teammates. Also an excellent defender, Durgens does a great job with her ball distribution and is always very calm on the court.
Highlights
Carissa Young
Carissa Young
The six-foot-tall Young is the one replacing Durgens when she’s at the net and her presence on the court adds an interesting dynamic to the Chargers’ game. Young is extremely athletic and uses her jumping ability and her long arms to stand in the way of opposing outside hitters with her big and technical block. A lefty, she’s also very effective on offense thanks to her vertical, her ability to hit different sets, most frequently quick tempos behind the setter, and her incredible wrist, which allows her to send the ball anywhere she wants across the net.
Andrea Colocado
Andrea Colocado
A new face on the team this season, Colocado does a good job in the middle despite her lack of experience and relatively small frame at 5’8”. The reasons for her dynamic play at the net are her quick feet, which allow her to be an offensive option even in transition and to move quickly from pin to pin when blocking, and her excellent leaping ability. Colocado is also impeccable with her timing when blocking, something that makes her a challenge to even much taller hitters, and can play very good defense.
Azoria Davis
Azoria Davis
The 5’9” Davis is a very complete outside hitter who gets to contribute on both sides of the ball. She uses her length very well at the net and hits a quick set at the pin that’s difficult to stop, especially when she hits a sharp angle. Davis is also very well-versed on the backcourt and can be used as a libero as well if needed, helping stabilize the team’s passing system.
