The idea is to do things a little bit differently this year, so after every match I attend, I’ll be posting a quick article highlighting the players that stood out the most in that particular encounter.
On Friday, September 9, we were present at the duel between the Paetow Panthers and the Katy Tigers in the Katy area. Playing at home, the Panthers had no trouble downing the visitors in three sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) to improve to 22-9 for the season. Katy now stands at 11-14.
Top Performers
Abigail Hardison
Abigail Hardison
The 5’8″ outside hitter played an impeccable match, strongly impacting Paetow’s victory. She was on fire with her offense and used her diverse arsenal, which included hitting with power, tipping the ball into open spots and tooling the block, to score points for the Panthers. Hardison was also very solid with her passing and had good serving runs during the first and second sets. She left the court with a triple-double of ten kills, 14 digs and 13 passes and still fired three aces.
The left-handed setter was heavily involved in Paetow’s victory in her double duty on the right side. Dumas did a very good job with her setting and was extremely effective with her offense as Katy’s blockers and defenders never came anywhere close to stopping her. She also created problems with her serves and got a few good digs during the match. Her output was 12 kills, 13 digs, 11 assists and one ace.
Highlights
Ilana Rosario
Ilana Rosario
One of the keys to Paetow’s dominant performance was maintaining the offensive system going at the same pace all night and Rosario deserves much credit for it. She’d come in to play the three back rotations and never look out of rhythm, keeping Dumas’ high level with her playmaking ability. Rosario made good decisions with her ball distribution and uses all her hitters as much as possible. She was a force from the service line with four aces and also produced 14 assists and six digs.
Gabi Young

Katy’s main setter had to do a lot of running because the team’s passing wasn’t very consistent throughout the match. She did the best she could given the complicated circumstances and did a good job in prioritizing the accuracy of her sets over a more complex distribution, putting her main hitters in a position to score more often than not. Young also had good moments with her serving and her defense.
The long outside hitter had a difficult start, making some mistakes and struggling to score on set one, but rebounded nicely. As she settled into the game, Chapman started using her 6’3″ frame better to have the edge over Paetow shorter blockers and got to score more consistently by hitting with power towards the end line. She played some rotations on the right too and looked more comfortable there.
