Continue ReadingThe WIAA has released final RPI ranking for the 2022 regular season. RPI is a tool used for seeding as teams head into state tournament play. The formula calls for a final rating determined by the following from the WIAA website:
“The formula used is as follows: RPI = (40% x WP) + (40% x OWP) + (20% x OOWP)”
“WP (Winning Percentage): Divide the number of wins by the number of total games played for your team.
OWP (Opponents’ Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponents (Note: this is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents’ Winning Percentage: Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.”
Out of state opponents are placed at a .500 winning percentage regardless of their record and their opponents record for tracking reasons.
Lets take a look at the teams in the top spots in each division and the payers powering them.
1B- Mossyrock. 16-0 record and .72734 rating
Payton Torrey
Payton Torrey
Torrey was the league MVP last season and will most likely claim that honor for the undefeated Vikings. She is the go-to point-getter for the team and has been there and done that in big matches throughout her career. Torrey will need to keep ripping the ball as the competition gets more difficult during the playoffs and state tournaments. Keep an eye on junior libero Abbie Lovan, she can run down a well placed shot and her passing and ball control are key to the Vikings back line defense
2B- Kalama. 19-0 record and .70678 rating
Irene Martinez
Irene Martinez
The senior outside leads an experienced squad that is eying a state title, she is one part of a talented and skilled frontline for the Chinooks. Martinez is athletic and can make the best out of any set that comes her way, doing an excellent job of attacking the edges of the block. Setter Rhegan O’Neil runs the offense efficiently, helping her attackers swing against good matchups from all over the court.
1A- Chelan. 15-0 record and .73879 ranking
Brynn Hughbanks
Brynn Hughbanks
Hughbanks has an impressive game for a freshman and continues to grow into a force for the Goats as the season nears the state tournament. With so many players returning that have experience, she can play easy and relaxed, taking smart, hard swings from the right and playing effortless defense showing off her great hands from the beach. Olivia Strandburg and Juliana Perez are two of the seniors looking to cap a huge four-year run at state for Chelan.
2A- Columbia River. 16-0 record and .68813 ranking
Junior Dreves is an SEC commit, headed to Auburn after graduation in 2024, and she has played like it for the Rapids this season. No spotlight has shined too bright for the dynamic attacker. In one of the biggest games of the season, she tallied 23 kills against rival Ridgefield, and she has poured it on from there. Sophomore Sydney Dreves, and seniors Sophie Worden and Sasha Pelkey are key to teams the title hopes headed into the postseason.
3A- Mt Spokane. 13-0 record and .70493 ranking
Ama has been healthy all season, and Mt. Spokane has been able to develop younger players and different lineups knowing that she is always there to handle any bumps in the road. She is a setter, but at right around six feet, and with great touch and power as a hitter, she can fill in the gap anywhere the Wildcats need it. They find a way to get the senior a few critical swings each match, letting her close out opponents in crunch time. Fellow senior Maggie Degenhart has been terrific, playing six rotations outside and delivering big kill numbers for Mt Spokane. The team is searching for a return to the state title match after a 5th place finish last season.
4A- Puyallup. 17-0 record and .70692 ranking
The Vikings are powerful, tall, and skilled along the front row. Brown is a junior middle who can roof any opponent at any time, and deliver a huge momentum boost for the team. She is hitting over .400 for the season, and with her and fellow middle Hollis Downing blasting away, defenses have to respect all of the attacking options Puyallup has. Setter Reese Shepard has had a great season running the offense, the Vikings are set on paying off this season by hoisting the championship trophy in the Yakima Sundome.
Highlights
There are other teams that just missed out on the top spot, and the RPI formula might not perfectly show every teams quality. It’s just a tool, and the games are what matter once playoffs and state begins.
